Transmission removal and installation tips and tricks, have I missed it?

I've been searching for a bit looking for how-tos on the removal and replacement of the tranny and haven't found much. Have I overlooked it?

Hoping to start the draining and pulling this weekend so I can put in another tranny.

I have not pulled an automatic transmission before, and certainly not one out of a car like this. Links to tech articles or at least random tricks to try would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also unsure as to the use of a jack and jackstands with this car. It seems that the spots where you place a floor jack are the very same as where you'd place the jacks themselves? I've seen the under-car diagram with the large circular areas where the car can be safely supported.

I miss my LSC. It's time to get it back on the road.

Pick up a factory manual. You can find them on ebay for 40 bucks or less.

And another note. I would highly suggest the useage of a two post lift for trans removal. Doing it from jack stands is only going to make the job twice as hard.

They sell two foot jack stands at Wal-Mart. Use those. I would also drop the K-Member to lower the engine so's you can get to all of the bolts. It's tricky. If you are pulling on the tranny and it won't come out, there's probably another bolt in there holding you back. PM me if you want my # to ask questions.

I replaced the tranny in my 93 and found it no harder than any other rear wheel drive car using sears 4 ton jack stands ,while its out id replace the egr tube while your at it you'll see

I would say EGR tube replacement is or can be the most difficult standard maintenance item to replace on a Gen1. If you're lucky not a huge deal.. if you're not, go to church.

Just delete the EGR, if you live in a state where you can get away with it.

The tranny isn't that tough. Put it up on jack stands, disconnect the battery. Get the car as high as possible, and make sure you have some kind of jack that can be used to lift the tranny. A regular jack will work if you have a couple of friends to hold it, or a motorcycle jack or a tranny jack. I have a motorcycle jack that i use for trannies. Remove the exhaust, remove the starter, disconnect the wiring harness and shifter cable, remove the t/c bolts, lower the gas tank slightly, remove the driveshaft loops, disconnect and remove the driveshaft, support the tranny on the jack, unbolt the tranny crossmember, lower the tranny just slightly for better access to the top bellhousing bolts, remove the bellhousing bolts, pry tranny gently away from motor, make sure t/c is clear of flywheel (or input shaft if you're doing it the ghetto way), and lower tranny. For the bellhousing bolts, a long extension with a universal socket on the end is the best way, esp. if coupled with an impact wrench. By "long" i mean about 3'.

It's really a piece of cake job, it's just a pain in the rear because you have to get so much other crap out of the way first (the exhaust, starter, and driveshaft are harder than the actual tranny, IMO). But maybe that's because i've done it so frickin' many times. If you have long tubes, it's about 5 times harder. Next time my tranny has to come out, the motor and k-member are coming with it.

Thanks for the tips, all...I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to the topic. The car is not yet done. We're currently reeling from a huge medical bill on one of our cats (thank heavens my credit union is liberal with their personal loans), and having a bit of emergency surgery on one of my other cars as well. Lovely how life gets in the way of things. I hope to actually get to the thing this month, should nothing else go wrong.

Probably can't get away with deleting the EGR, I've gotta go through emissions every two years with the LSC.
