Transmission Replacement

It looks like it is time.

141,000 miles, 80k with a TransGo shift kit, 40k pushing 4.10s, and it is ready to die.

According to Certified "it slips in 4th, it's a problem inside the transmission". They want to install a rebuilt with 2yr warranty, for "about $1800".

Dennis quotes about the same for parts and shipping for his "built" 4r70w, but then I have to find somebody to install it here in Nebraska.

Two Questions:

(1) does anyone have a source for decent (cheaper) rebuilt? I know what Dennis sells can't be matched for less... but I'm not sure I can afford it. What are my other options?

(2) does anyone know anyone in the Omaha Nebraska area who can and will do an install?

Thanks!
David

RE: Transmission Replacement

David there is a place called Auto Trans Matic out in Bennington. (238-3766) My Girlfriend's dad and I have taken MANY trannys there with excelent luck. I just called them and heres the price quotes. They actually rebuild YOUR transmission. All trannys come with a new TQ convertor, shift kit, and all other updates installed. The guy even told me they'd put in Mercon V for me if I wanted.

$1,085 - Installed
$905 - Carry out

Hell of a lot better than $1800. PM me if ya would like some help/more questions. I live in omaha, and would be willing to lend a hand and a foot to ya if possible ;)

RE: Transmission Replacement

Search the junkyards for a '98-up tranny with low miles. That'll be a much cheaper option then a rebuild, and it'll be a better transmission than most budget rebuilds as well.

RE: Transmission Replacement

DO NOT got to AAMCO. I'm not happy with the latest rebuild I had done with them. Besides the $2k it ended up costing me, it isn't running 100% after only 40,000 miles on the rebuild. Of course their original estimate was $1,400.

They won't fix the current problem either.

Obviously make sure all the updates and Mercon V are used in any tranny rebuild you have done.

RE: Transmission Replacement

Yeah when I called them the guy actually brought the updates like the 1-2 and 3-4 to my attention. He even said they'd put in a shift kit if I like.

RE: Transmission Replacement

best bet is to go w/ dennis's trans, and who ever does your trans get a trans cooler, its a life saver

RE: Transmission Replacement

Well, when my tranny pops i don't plan on spending more than $500 to get back on the road again. But Dennis' trannies are a good option too.

RE: Transmission Replacement

if you got the cash, to it right, if you get a rebiult it might break later and then your have another rebiult to do, so why not just get a new one with the worx! it wont hurt to get a rebiult but when mine starts to act up im getting a new one@

o' and check the scperformance site for a tranny they were running a special if you bought a tranny( i think it came w/ a new tq conv or one for have price i dont remember)

RE: Transmission Replacement

I am going to Bennington this week to get my tranny fixed.

my question now is,

they are going to have the tranny out of the car, is this an opportunity for me to do anyitng else while it is out of the way?

Then I am replacing the IAC and VSS and going to get some track times... gonna be a good summer on my new tranny!

RE: Transmission Replacement

You could do the cooling mod that Aspen performance/motorsports has on their website. I believe Pony(joe) has posted about it before. More or less looks like you add a cooling tube in the back for cyls, 7-8.

RE: Transmission Replacement

Thanks for the advice, but I went with a stock rebuild and no extras.

I miss my shift kit! I have a Fordchip that I thought would be firmer w/o the kit, an dit is better than without the chip... but not hard enough. So I think I will go back and have them do the shift upgrade from TCCOA.

total bill was $1130, and it took one day.

The problem they reported was, I had blown my 3rd gear clutch.

RE: Transmission Replacement

Good luck and let us know how you like the shift kit when it's done.

RE: Transmission Replacement

I read somewhere that to put in the tranny from a 98 requires moving some of the pins around on the connector. Can someone give me some more on this? I am replacing my transmission too, and I think I'll go with a 98 as well.

I'm not sure if you recall, but I had a new (updated for 1998 reman) Ford transmission installed by my Lincoln dealer. Two weeks later, I had a second new (updated for 1998 reman) Ford transmission installed since I had major shuddering on shifts. About a month ago, I finally convinced the service manager that the shuddering was due to the torque converter - he suspected that the problem was that the reman TQ was a core from a mid-90s non-Mark VIII Ford vehicle, and it wasn't the updated TQ. He located a reman TQ with a '97 or '98 part number on it, installed, and it's been trouble-free ever since. (The new reman one he pulled out had a '96 p/n).

My point? If you're updating the trans to '98, BE SURE to upgrade the TQ to a '98.
