I had a what I called a small leak in my tranny it only has 67K on a 98 Gen II.... just got word from the tranny shop that my front seals are gone x( Has anyone had this type of problem it seems to early for this tranny even though I do get on it once in a while and is it worth it to have a shift kit installed at this time will that help? Tranny dropped seals fixed and shift kit put in for 525$ is the reasonable?

RE: Transmission seals Gen II

I had to have the gaskets replaced about 6 to 12 months ago (I forget exactly). It was covered under my extended warranty. It wasn't leaking bad. If it was a year ago, I had probably around 60K miles on it?

RE: Transmission seals Gen II

Please forgive me for being skeptical. but before I would spend $525, I would buy a 15 oz can of "Trans-X" and try that. Believe me, if the leak continues, you have a problem that will require mechanical repair i.e. torn seal etc. I have never seen Trans-X hurt any transmission, and for $8 or so, how can you go wrong? And, yes I have seen a few that Trans-X didnt help.

RE: Transmission seals Gen II

I find it hard to believe the seals are gone - My '97 has almost 80K miles with no leaks at all.

What seems nore likely is that the 0-ring where the filler tube goes into the tranny is leaking. This is about a 10 cent part, but it's kind of a pain to unhook the filler tube for replacement.

You should really dry the bottom of the tranny to see if it's leaking from the front seal. Fluid would collect inside the bellhousing - if you take the inspection cover off, (little rubber thing), and fluid drips out, then it probably is the front seal. But if fluid is just generally running down around the valve body area, then it's probably the filler tube 0-ring.

RE: Transmission seals Gen II

For $500 to fix it, I'd give the trans seal stuff a go. I put an entire can into 88' mustang GT with a badly leaking power steering rack, and it worked quite well for over one year. Another can, another 6 months, and I sold the car.

my 97 has no leaks, but my friends 95 thunderchicken spat out a front seal. so it's not all that unheard of. If you can't do the work yourself $500 doesn't sound like a bad price. Ask for a garauntee though, at least 30 days, against further leakage.

RE: Transmission seals Gen II

My tailshaft seal had a drip. A new seal was installed when I had the stock drive shaft replaced with a new MMDS a while back. No drip since then. I truly believe that the stock DS vibrates the transmission enough to make it leak, along with shaking the daylights out of the entire car at highway speeds.

If you are going to pull the trans to fix a drip... consider installing a new MMDS to smooth out your drivetrain, and not put all that stress on you, and your new seals.

Thanks for the input forgot about that driveshaft vibration anyway the side seal was leaking also it is done now and it is a different shifting car had a shift kit put in while he was at it should of done that long ago no leaks got a 12 month 12000 mile guarantee
