trany

Hello all. Well here goes, i think i know the answers to my problem here, but i will describe it for you anyway. approxamatly 2 1/2 years ago i had my trany replaced.....all was well....until recently. Now she tends to shake back to front rather unpleasently when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. if the trany is under load, it tends to be smoother then if i'm just going easy down the street slowly. if she shifts then.....she tells me all about it! I took it back to the trany guys to inspect and they tell me all is well! any advise you can give will be appreciated....thanks in advance. Chris

i had the 1-2 upgrade in the old trany........and no just regular mercon fluid.....would the change to mercon v do it on its own, or do i need the 1-2 upgrade as well?

also, would it take this long for the trany to act up?.......i am mech inclined and feel very silly having to ask these questions.

The early Mark VIIIs were all shipped with regular Mercon. Later, Ford issued a TSB to switch to Mercon V for all Mark VIIIs and many other vehicles with the 4R70W transmission.

And yes, the 1-2 accumulator needs to be updated.

Change the accumulator and replace the fluid with Mercon V. :)

Yes, what he said.

Does anyone know if the Mark VIII (1995) has a transmission overfill blowout? My transmission is leaking but seems to only leak when it is full... when it goes down a bit it doesn't leak.... though I can still see fluid on the dip stick.

It is leaking around the dip stick tube. There is an "O" ring that dries out and needs replacing. Not a big deal. You need about 3' of extension to get to the bolt on the back of the head that holds the dip stick tube bracket. Once that is out you can put the tube out of the tranny and replace the "O" ring, and reinstall. If you have a lift and the extensions it should take you 10 minutes. Tip-- use some grease to hold the bolt in the socket while you attempt to re-stab it back into the back of the head.

I wish you the best to do it in 10 minutes..... In my Gen II, it takes REALLY small hands and a quarter drive..... IF you can even reach it then....too much crap in the way!!!

You gotta be about 6'tall from waist to head and have a 2 year olds hands with a 25 year olds strength to do it in the driveway.

Bit I agree that that's prob the problem. When I installed my new tranny, I bent the dipstick right there at the entry to the trans and had to replace the whole dipstick....what a bear with it in the car.

Charlie's correct, about 3' of 1/4" extensions does the trick. It's one of those things that if done enough you know exactly where to attack it from. I don't think it took much more than 30 minutes to pull the tranny from my car on a lift (after the exhaust and driveshaft were out). So, 10 minutes to R&R the dipstick tube sounds about right.

Now there's a trick I'd like to SEE done.....on MY car!

Hahaha... bring it on over to my place and we'll make the 5 hour trek to OH and we'll put it on the lift @ DirtyDog Performance for 10 minutes and show you how to replace the dipstick tube o-ring. :p

Just have to watch for the deer on the way back!

That's exactly what I used to pull the top tranny bolts to drop the whole thing....At first I thought he's talking about dropping the whole transmission....!
