I would like to know if there is a way to remove the silver cap off the end of the turn signal without breaking the rest of the arm. The silver cap on the existing turn signal has the **** broke off and will not stay in so I have another one coming, but don't really want to break the rest of the unit to get the silver tip off intact. Please HELP! Thanks!

Gen 1 did not have a "silver (chrome) cup" however...
The arm with the switch can de disassembled, but you wouldn't not be able to assemble it back - there are some fusion plastic pins.

I guess I will have to "destroy" the replacement to get the end cap off. It looks as though it would be able to be pushed in due to the direction of the tabs on the end cap. The one I bought is used, but I hated to destroy it to get the silver end cap. Lincoln says the part is not sold seperately and the total assembly is over $500.00, and I don't really want to remove the steering wheel to replace the entire unit. If someone will still let me know if I did remove the end cap off the replacement unit, it can be installed by just pushing it in. Thanks!

I think you would prob "destroy" BOTH the old one AND the new one. Bit the bullet and pull the steering wheel...it's isn't difficult. Replace the whole multi-function switch (turn signal stalk).

Could someone tell me how to remve the steering wheel on this 1998. The last time I pulled s steering wheel you had to have a steering wheel puller to take one off. (1966 pontiac). Thanks!

Yes, you have to use the puller. The standart 2-jaws puller (3 inch one) will work too. Also a TORX50 driver.

yea I always yank it but not hard enough to yank the wires right out of the clockspring

mine broke on my 97 (car came w/o one)...bought a used replacement...Used a thin flathead and carefully pried off the chrome w/s cap. Just stick it in between the black and the button..inserted it to the broken one and its been for for years.

I did this too.
Emphasis on very carefully.

Helpful hint: Get some duct tape and and tape the clock spring inner sleeve to its housing so it doesn't unwind when you slide it off the steering shaft. Otherwise you'll have to re-center the clock spring before you reinstall it.

I don't know if it's common at other stores, but here, you can "borrow" a wheel puller from Pep Boys. You have to pay the full price on it up front (around $60), but once you're done you can return it for a full refund. They're perfectly cool about it.

Even with that, it's not as bad as you think it is. It only takes a few minutes. Replacing the whole switch is definitely the way to go. Don't blow $500 on a plastic button.
