U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

RE: U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

Thanks for the link. This topic has been gone over a few times on here. I guess the lack of quality is more a perception than reality. Who knows?

RE: U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

I like the "things on the side of the road" study.

When's the last time you saw a Mark VIII broken down on the side of the road? How about a Taurus?

I see a series of Chryslers and Toyota/Nissan's littered all over the place in these parts. Those three nameplates make up probably 80% of what I see "on the side of the road".

I can put up with a few "things gone wrong" on any car - but if it makes me walk - I'm WAY less than happy.

RE: U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

Yea, i've had plenty of problems with just about every car i've owned, but I don't think i've ever been left on the side of the road because of anything but my own stupidity.

What a novel idea! ;)
Exactly what I have been saying now for, oh 20 years or so! But you'd better rush out & buy yoself a hard hat. Many persons on here do NOT agree with us, and will let you know why you are wrong, in uncertain terms! Prepare to DUCK!
(However.....after many all American cars in my family, my next car will be an Audi.) Reason? I have wanted an all wheel drive convertible with a Hi Po V-8 all my life, and now for the first time somebody (Audi) is making it in the near future.

I love the people who paste the American flags all over their Camrys and Altimas, don't you? Bumper sticker in the back window of my Lincoln says:
BUY AMERICAN
-OR-
BYE AMERICA !

I just got bummed out - 'just purchased a couple Dell laptops for the company, (Dell - good ol' Texas company, right?). Turn them over when they get here, and plastered all over the backs - "Made in China"!!! If I would have known that in advance, I definitely would have looked at something else, though I wonder if ANY laptops are made in the US anymore...?

isn't an AUDI a nazi car?

RE: U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

100% absolutely NOT. I suggest you go see the Top Award winning (3 awards) movie of 2002, The Pianst. In there, you'll learn about Wanderer, DKW, Horst and one name that I forget for the moment, who went on to form "Auto Union" (The four rings - OOOO) that symbolize Audi - which is latin, for "Listen" and also stands for Auto Union Das InternationalE, which was the combination of the aforementioned. They were all Natoanlized after WWII by the remaining factions under Hitler's followers and that so that they could have their possession seized and run out of business. Which they did. During the WWII, Mercedes made the tanks, and vehicles, and BMW went into printing and printed all of the propaganda, dropped from Mercedes engined planes.
Meanwhile, DKW, Wanderer Horst, et. al. fabricated a false floor on every level of the plant, and under that floor they put 100's & 100's of Jews to save them from certain death. On the top levels they made greeting card, but that was a hoax to fool the Germna boys & it worked. They dropped food down in the dark, at night and many other health care things.
After the war, they were put out of business, but the Jews had escaped, because the DKW, Wanderer et. al. had gotten for all of them fake I.D.s & help them escape to Italy, America, and other places.
When the company reformed, they became Audi. They also kept reems of documents that were turned over at the Nuremburg Trials that helped to convect Mercedes & BMW for slave camps, etc, etc, which is EXACTLY WHY they aforementioned were convected.
See the Pianist movie. At the bitter end, there are credits. It said that the movie could not have been made if not For Audi's heroic efforts and record keeping, and that the movie in fact - was dedicated to Audi !!!
It then went on to list the opther credits. Furthermore, I have been told (this heresay) that Audi is the #1 selling car in Israel, but I do not know if this is fact or not.
Audi is okay in my book. I mean not as good as buying an American car, but the best of the worst when "crossing over" ~

I think that every American citizen should (TRY) to buy American ,I know sometimes you can't, I at least put forth the effort cars, tires ,shoes, clothes etc. (by the way walmart ain't a good place to buy American)

RE: U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

Everytime I see a news clip of some event in Israel or any of the arabic countries I see lots of Mercedes and some Toyotas and Nissans. I guess the only things the Jews and Arabs agree on is Mercedes and that they hate each other. :(

I almost always buy American. However, the people who have bought quad 4's from GM and had all those head gasket and cracked head problems would probably be po'ed enough to never buy GM again. Not to mention the diesel Oldsmobiles and Vegas. The head gasket failures of the Ford 3.8 engine po'ed me when it happened on my son's car. The thermostat failed and the head gasket failed immediately. No cars are perfect but I expect more.
When my 79 V8 Mustang had a designed in rear brake lockup, Ford told the NHTSA that they would fix any Mustang a customer brought back with that complaint. Both Ford Dealers in Raleigh denied all knowledge. One even told me that they called "Ford Engineering" and they did not know anything about it. Anyway, I got the parts man to check all of the brake parts in the 79 and 80 to find out what Ford had done to fix it. The 80 had a different proportioning valve which I bought and installed in the 79 to fix it. I was po'ed at Ford for that.
Whether you want to admit it or not, you can put a Honda or Toyota beside an American car and usually the American car comes out third best in durability and repairs.

My ass. It's more a perception than a reality. Japanese cars have plenty of their own problems, you just don't have the anecdotal evidence, because you were spending your time with fords and GM's.

I've seen blown head gaskets on honda's too.

RE: U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

The most problematic car i've ever owned was a Mazda 626. Hmm but yea every car has its share of problems.

RE: U.S. automakers' brands get a bum rap

While I drive North American cars (as in a Lincoln, a Bronco II and my wife's Ranger), it never ceases to amaze me just how few "American" (as in USA parts) are in the vehicle. This is especially true of the Mark. Every wonder why so many plastics and white metal pieces break in these cars? Just follow you nose south of the border.... As for the electronics....(which are mostly reliable I might add)... are not necessarily from the good 'ole US of A.

Assembly jobs, sure. But I'd like to see a higher percentage of components come from this side of the pond if they could be made economically.
