ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

Has anyone out there ever had a Mark VIII tuned for the best gas mileage possible? I'm not talking about going to a smaller engine, but most other things are fair game. Higher rear end gears, smaller injectors, custom burnt chip,of course thinner tires, some type of water or steam induction to cool cylinder temps? Would that make it possible to be run leaner, safely? I know from personal experience a completely stock mark(running properly of course) can get 30-32 on highway trips. Is 45-50 mpg posssible? Just wondering, I think it would be cool to have this kind of luxury and that type of gas mileage. p.s. I have a Mustang for speed! I'm not that old yet!

40 mpg is stretching it. i've never even seen 30 myself, the best i've averaged on a highway trip in a mark is about 25-27 mpg.

You won't be able to make it run lean enough, safely enough, to get that kind of mileage. It could be done, but it would most likely require a complete redesign of the cylinder head.

Some newer engines from Chrysler and GM have DOD (displacement on demand), where 4 cylinders are shut off at cruising speed. In order to eliminate the pumping losses, the valves are held closed in the deactivated cylinders. I still don't think they get 40 mpg.

Weren't the advertised EPA averages 18 city / 25 highway? For 93-98 that was pretty good for a 'near luxury' $40K vehicle. Unlike the SUVs of the time, the manufacturer had to watch the mileage to meet CAFE limits at the time. I guess what I'm trying to say, in essence the Mark VIII was tuned for optimum mileage for it's size, class and drivetrain.

Ported heads, headers, and 2.73 gears. You should see around 35 mpg, maybe more, with that setup, if you keep your foot out of the gas.

27.5 MPG with 93 Amoco Ultimate at 70-75 MPH cruise control off, Route 95 from Florida to DC area. Goes down significantly with lesser gas: Cheapo 91 Citgo = 24 MPG, 87 regular = bucking bronco, 18 MPG. Who cares about mileage anyway? I'd trade 5MPG for a second in the quarter anyday. Even at $2.30 a gallon, life is too short to worry about it in a VIII. Get a hybrid car if you care.

Thursday Tiff and I left for Lake Tenkiller State Park in Oklahoma.
I filled up before we left.

When we stopped in Eufala Ok. I had gone 447 miles on that tank of gas.

I filled it up, we drove around for the weekend, and filled it up for the return trip.

1200+ miles used 3 tanks of fuel

Not too shabby for a drag car with 373's and I had the cruise control set at 75 with the AC pumping THUNDER!

Probably could have gotten better had I slowed down a bit, turned off cruise control and the AC.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

Change oil, trans, power steering, rear end fluids to full synthetic, get an electric water pump.
Lower the car, install some belly pans. Remove the AC. Like you said, get some skinner tires with low rolling resistance, also increasing the tires inflation should also lower the rolling resistance. Only drive down hill with a tail wind.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

I got 28 mpg with the cruse at 70 and the air on, when I drove my car back from Florida. Bone stock:)

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

I have kept a spreadsheet on fuel consumption for the past 3 years. I drive in a mix of city and highway. always use premium fuel. Average is 17.70 MPG. Yes car is in fantastic tune (has been dyno tuned) and only has the finest everything. The only way I can imagine getting 30mpg would be cruise set at 40mph on the interstate.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

I got 22 miles per gallon recently coming back to vegas from reno with GET THIS 4.56 gears.75 MPH comes at about 3050 RPM.
Not bad considering it is stock except the gears and gutted exhaust.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

you could get 2.73 gears, but then you'll but putting more load on the engine, you could get a chip tuned you milage, and you could lean it a weeeee bit. But the best you'll get is 35mpg. Which is incrediable for a 3800lb v-8 car.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

Last year when I came back from Carlisle I drove 512 miles on a tank of gas in the red car. It figured up to be around 31.0 mpg. I had previosly recieved better than 32 mpg on the way to columbus. This was after I changed the exhasut and put the long tubes on. I saw gains of around 3-4 mpg with the longtubes on the highway. If you were to put 2.73's along with longtubes or so I would imagine 35 would not be that imossible to get.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

I average about 19-20mpg with mixed city/highway driving. It really went up when I was going to school about 18 miles away (on the freeway). Now it's gone down to about 19mpg exactly.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

on a ride home from bellmore to brooklyn i got about 32 mpg in my 97 lsc. i have a chip 80mm maf with the LMS ice box and a K&N cone filter. car is lowered and oil is synthetic with lucas. only use 93 octane...... only things i can think of that affect mileage. It really is great milage for a car this big. and a trunk full of stuff to boot. ever since my o2's threw codes at me my mileage has dropped DRASTICALLY!!!!!!! way less than 10 in the city and around 20 on the highway. got new motorcraft o2's on order from rockauto.com good price there. about 50 a piece. can't wait to see how my mileage reacts!!!!!

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

Got the best milage in the 2 years we've had the car Sunday. Filled up with 89 octane in Bennington,VT Sunday evening. Left Hoosick Falls, NY on Monday AM (8AM). Pulled into the gas station here in Millersville, MD at 2:35. Computer(the car's) and my math had same milage...26.6 MPG, 388 miles. Gave her some 91 octane then! Cheaper here than either NY, NJ or VT. Oh yeah, hit 98,000 just before arriving home.

RE: ULTIMATE GAS MILEAGE FOR A MARK VIII

The best gas mileage I've had was about 30 mpg on a tank of gas. This was non-stop driving through Illinois and on the Indiana and Ohio turnpike. Normally in mixed highway/city driving, I average about 22 mpg.

Just wanted to let you know that my husband drives my Mark VIII(96 - pearl white- 50K-AZ original) to work daily because out of our 4 cars (87 Stang GT -50K original, 00 F250 diesel-65K, 03 Expedition - 15K) it gets the best gas mileage - 28mpg!! Now he drives 35 miles one way and it is on a divided highway.

Even though it is MY fun car, he loves the luxury of it. However, in the last year, we have had some minor problems that Thank God, my husband was able to deal with.

We to put a heater core(yes, he did it!), new EMI module(hard part to find used!), and an alternator. When the alternator died, it shorted out the module. Altogether, we had to put roughly 800 bucks into it, but we didn't have to pay for labor. Just a lot of my husband's sweat!

Obviously, we are not the poster children for fuel efficiency or fuel conservation. But hey, we enjoy our big 4 wheel toys and wouldn't want it any other way!
