Underdrive Pulley noise

Good to hear. :)

Have you run high revs yet?

Yes. I have done some wot out of 1st and 2nd gear and the noise is gone. I'm actually glad to have the stock pullies back on because it's supposed to be 100 degrees today.

Maybe in the future when I get a cooler t-stat I'll run underdrives. For now though, I'm good and that was one hell of a scare.

When I did mine I put the stock water pump pulley on and just used a shorter belt. I wasn't getting adequate cooling with the pump slowed down that much.

The oil pump gears are sintered metal and are extremely hard for wear purposes. That said they are also brittle which is why they can easily be fractured by beating or using a impact gun on the crank.

FWIW, I put u/d pullies on my T-Bird with a March 1158 Fluid U/D harmonic balancer and let me tell you what happened. I didn't have any weird noises and gained like 3 MPG which just tickled me to death.

Well, about a month later, I was going down the highway at ~70 MPH when the engine just quit. I had a funny feeling it was the trigger wheel and guess what? It was. It completely shattered. The only explanation I could come up with was a didn't have the harmonic balancer on all the way. I used an impact and a torque wrench to properly torque it, too! When I replaced the trigger wheel and put on my 1158 (for the second time), I torqued the balancer, then tapped it with a hammer, re-torqued it, tapped it, re-torqued it until I knew it was on proper because it just wouldn't go on any more. I haven't had any problems since.

Yes, a Harmonic Balancer Remover/Installer would be the proper way to do it and I would highly recommend one.
