Update: HOTLNC's Oil Test

I just got back HOTLNC's oil report after 4,772 miles. "The Iron levels [from cylinder liners] have recovered...You still have a lot of miles left on this engine."

I'm breathing easier. I guess I panicked needlessly.

Yes this is good news.

I'd be afraid to get the oil reports on my high mileage engines.:)

Although, I've seen a couple 100k+ mile Mark VIII engines dissassembled, and was happy to see that I could still see the original cross hatching on all of the cylinders.

What caused the elevated iron levels? What were they?
The iron levels were 35 ppM last time with about 7K on the odo. The iron levels this time were 16 ppM. They figure it was due to longer than normal oil life and "driven hard" or "overheating condition." I've done no hard driving with it and I do not remember over heating it. Other than that, they can't explain why.

4.7K last time and Over 7K time before last -- when iron was seen. They said the oil had more life in it after the 4.7K miles.

That worries me a bit because I am using 6-7k intervals on my 98 crown Vic... perhaps I should change the oil more frequently....

Would just changing the filter more often be a better option?

I ran synthetic in my T-bird (after 60k) and changed the filter every 4k add a quart, then a complete every 12k. Not sure if it did any good (like to think so), but I had 225k on the motor and trans when I was hit and totaled the car.

As these motors get older I'm guessing there will be more to clog a filter, but oil can certainly go 6-7k under normal driving.
