I drained all the fluid. All I got was 9 quarts. I Started to fill up and on the 11 quart it started to over flow and i lost alot on the floor. I drove to the car wash and cleaned all under the car and its still dripping and smoking were is dripping on the cat. i just checked again it only let go of ten jrops. Anyways the Mercon V gets 5 stars because my tranny is as smooth as silk. I was getting kinda rough shifting but man oh man does that mercon v shift smooth

RE: Urgent tranny

I think its called a Black Russian if it's equal parts.

However - if it's a mixture of synthetic and conventional trans fluid I would start saving my money for a flush and refill.

What's the capacity of the trans and torque converter anyway? 11?

RE: Urgent tranny

I drained the conveter and pan pretty good. I think I put to much in to fast and it poured out the filler. I also used a cork gasket but would that matter because its driping from some were. I little somke because of the cat. I pressure washed underneath the car to get most of it. but could the rush of fluids do somthing to the o ring

12 quarts.

Most likely the transmission pan filled and burped back because of the amount drained from the torque converter. To avoid this in the future:

1. Measure what you drain out.

2. With new Mercon V fluid - fill with 1/2 of the quantity you drained.

3. With rear wheels off ground and e-brake released, start engine, run at idle, shift transmission through all positions pausing at each to allow oil to circulate with engine at idle. Allow wheels to turn if they want to. Return shifter to park position. Shut off engine. This will partially fill torque converter and make roon in tranny pan.

4. Complete filling of new Mercon V with remaining 1/2 of the quantity you drained.

5. Repeat step 3, except allow to idle in park while checking for leaks for a few minutes prior to shut down.

6. Test drive long enough to bring temperature of transmission up to normal operating range.

7. With vehicle parked on level ground and engine idling with transmission in park, check level of transmission fluid on dipstick.
Fill if necessary, in small increments, until the dipstick reading indicates full with fluid hot(operating temperature).

RE: Urgent tranny

Yep, you're gonna have to run it a bit for the t/c to fill up. Check it again now and see if it's full.

RE: Urgent tranny

Why did you use a cork gasket and not reuse the one that was on it?

Also Dave, Mercon V is a synthetic blend not a full synthetic like Amsoil. I have seen additives for sale that calm to make Mercon III, Mercon V. I think it would be a bigger problem in mixing burnt broken down fluid then Mercon III with V

RE: Urgent tranny

Ok I got like 9 or 10 quarts out i think i made a little mess. the pan was stuck and it wasnt coming down then it did out of no where. i lost alot to the floor. I drain the conveter and the pan completly. OK its 7:41 in the mourning I ran out side in my boxers and no tranny fluid on the ground.

RE: Urgent tranny

There is however fluid still on the cat if the o ring was broke would it drip on it. How long would it take for all the tranny fluid to burn of after I spilled a lot on it. just sprayed it with the hose to get most of it. off.

RE: Urgent tranny

shouldn't take long, maybe 20 miles of driving if you dunked it good. There is a possibility that you have a leak at that o-ring.
