Using mid-grade gas

RE: Using mid-grade gas

[div class="dcquote"][strong]Quote[/strong]Yeah, I married into money. My wife owns her own business.Ergo, she drives the Hummer and I drive my $6,000 Mark.Though I wouldn't trade for an instant!!! :)
[/div]You should have no mortgage then. :)

RE: Using mid-grade gas

I haven't considered running a lower octane in the Mark, but I have in the Vic. He only requires 87 (we call it lawnmower gas!), so I've switched him to the lower octane. I used to always run 89 in him.

If things continue to be terrible with the gas prices, we have decided to get a couple of econocars for daily drivers. This is the best trade-off for us, because the daily drivers will be driven the most anyway.

We will not give up the "fun cars", since they are the only hobby we really have. We have always loved cars, and have worked hard to get them :*

RE: Using mid-grade gas

For what it's worth, I've been running mid-grade for years in both my 94 and 98 Mark. Never heard a ping. As a daily driver, I just can't bring myself to spend the extra dough for premium high test. I just make sure I don't buy cheap gas. I go with what we Canucks call Esso or Sunoco, sometimes Shell. Never cut rate... I've got 100K miles on the '98, so far, so good... Now, if I was a racer....

RE: Using mid-grade gas

I drive my Mark about 12,000 miles a year. It costs me .33¢ a day to use 93 octane rather than 87 octane.

12,000 / 20 (mpg) =600 gal
X 20¢ amount 93 octane costs over 87 octane = $120
/ 365 (days) = .33¢ per day.

My wife says we can afford it. :)

RE: Using mid-grade gas

Today's prices
600 gallons premium X $3.00/gal = $1800.00
600 gallons regular X $2.80/gal = $1680.00
........................savings = $ 120.00

6.7% extra expense

1998 prices
600 gallons premium X $1.00/gal = $600.00
600 gallons regular X $0.80/gal = $480.00
........................savings = $120.00

600/480 = 20% extra expense

If premium would have increased by the same percentage that regular increased since 1998, premium would now cost $0.70/gal more than regular! Since it still costs only $0.20/gal more than regular, it's a bargain compared to 1998!

Use premium.
