Validation Error .dll

I hate my stupid computer.

OK, I installed updates for my Zone alarm, and now I get an error message when I try to open it that "Validation failed for C:\Windows\system32\vspubapi.dll."

I went to the Zone Alarm site, and tried a couple fixes which they recommended. (I ran the certificate or something, and then I did this uninstall of registrations and reistalled them). Didn't work for me. Someone suggested reinstalling IE, but I couldn't figure out how to do that (I seem to have SP2). Oh yeah, I have Windows XP.

Then it said to run my antivirus software, which won't exactly work since I can't get it to run. ::nono::

Seems like this is a problem for a lot of people, and not necessarily a Zone Labs problem, but I just can't figure out what to do next.

Anyone have this problem or know how I can fix it?

RE: Validation Error .dll

I stopped using zonealarm on all my machines because of problems like this. For windows xp(sp2) the best firewall is the one that comes with windows. Just turn that one on and you wont have to worry about anything, and you wont need to install another firewall that hogs resources.
If you want added protection get a NAT hardware firewall, but having products like zonealarm is just redundent when windows gives you a perfectly good one. (unless of course you're using ZA for popup blocking)

That being said, what antivirus are you using and what error's are you getting when you try to run it?

RE: Validation Error .dll

No antivirus right now, without the ZA. I use their firewall system and antivirus. Maybe I'll just look into something else - I think I had a three month trial with Norton or something when I got this computer, but whatever firewall came with the computer was messing me up, so I deleted it.

RE: Validation Error .dll

If you have Service Pack 2 for Windows XP then you should use their built-in firewall. Go to your Control Panel and double-click the Windows Firewall icon. Make sure it's turned on.

For a good and free Antivirus program, get AVG Free Edition - http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

I install this on computers I fix and they haven't had a problem. It's even installed on my Mom's computer.

Do you have cable or DSL? Do you have a router? If you have a router, chances are the router has a built-in firewall and a software-based firewall is not necessary.

RE: Validation Error .dll

Thanks. I have cable. I turned on windows firewall (I had ZA prior to this computer), and downloaded the free virus program. Says it's only a 30 day trial though.

RE: Validation Error .dll

Windows doesnt suck, people just aren't capably informed on how to use it. I have never had a virus on any of my NT4.0 based OS machines (XP, 2kpro, 2k3server). The only one i run a firewall on is my business computer. For the average user mac's would be great, but the functionality and customizability of xp can't be beat. Plus there's the little factor of not being able to replace mac components if you want to upgrade.
