It was a PITA! Didn't remove the motor mounts or their bolts. Used a length of 2X4 and jacked the motor up and away from the brake booster......cover lifted right off.

If you were able to move the motor enough to remove the covers, without removing the motor mount through bolts, then your mounts need to be replaced.
 
Maybe...... I had the booster loose and really didn't jack it over THAT far.... the engine doesn't seem to lift when I torque it......
 
lol it shouldnt move hardly anywhere if your mounts are good. like doug said, if you managed to jack it up and move it anywhere that allowed you to remove the valve cover i'd say you need a mount or mounts. the real way to see if it moves is have someone in the car with their foot on the brake and shift from drive to reverse a few times i bet you'll see your motor lift that way.
