Vavle covers

Ok, What is the trick to getting the pass. side vavle cover off ? This car has got to be the hardest Ford to work on that I have ever owned. Nothing is easy to work on.

RE: Vavle covers

Yep,
I took all of them off. I just can't get it to clear the strut tower and get the front ovet the timing chain. The A/C lines in the back are not helping much also. I was thinking that may next move would have to be,is to remove the pass side motor mount bolt and jack that side of the motor up to give me more room. I just wanted to ask someone before I went to all that trouble.

RE: Vavle covers

Yes, that's the way to do it. Undo the mount, jack it up about 1.5" on the pass side and it will clear fine. Make sure you RTV that gasket in there to prevent it from falling out on you.

RE: Vavle covers

FWIW, I was able to get mine off without jacking the engine up. You really do need to use some good gasket sealant(like Permatex HPF?) to be sure to hold the gasket in place upon reassembly. It's blind trust 'cause you simply can't tell if it's still in the right place by the time you wiggle the cover back into position.

Did you move the fuse box out of the way? It helps.

I don't know what you're sweating, it's really easy and makes this job a piece of cake.

Well, it's not something done daily. ;)

I decided to pull the cam cover after spotting oil in one of the spark plug wells when I was changing plugs. I also took the opportunity to put in one of Ponyfreak's cam shims. Reading the board here, I was glad it was the passenger side and not the driver's side. I had no real issues. I believe I unbolted the coil assembly on that side to allow a bit more room to shift towards the front and squeeze out from under the cowl. It was close coming by the strut tower, but it cleared.

After cleaning the mating surfaces and gasket(s), I used Permatex HPF sealant to tack the gasket(s) in place on the cover. Then I used silicone on the exposed gasket prior to resetting the cover back in place.
