Went to dyno with Navi cams

Just as topic says. I finally made it around to hitting up a dynojet with the Navigator cams today.

226.8 RWHP @ 5200
267.9 RWTQ @ 4400

The HP takes a sever plunge after 5200. An indication I need the Cobra intake? :)

I'm really surprised at the TQ number. Must be the cams as the car is bone stock from paper air filter through stock cats to stock mufflers. My bone stock 96 Cobra put down 250rwhp, and 250rwtq.

Well, I say peak TQ cause that's with the converter unlocked when you first nail it before it locks up (it's what a lot of people post as their "max #s"). ;) Average TQ on the curve is actually ~254rwtq. Still pretty darn high I believe.

I went to track back in March, here's the 1/4 results:

The difference now then from the track is a built transmission (shift kit, etc). Shouldn't matter as the convert locks up at WOT.

Now I do have a custom chip for the tranny, but I don't think it's doing much as I can run straight 87 octane in the car without pinging (telling me I can go a lot more in timing).

Just to think what TQ numbers I could make if I throw in 4 degrees onto the baseline... I just may do that (need the chip changed anyhow).

I'll try to have a friend scan it as my scanner has gone on the fritz (haven't used it in over a year).

RE: Went to dyno with Navi cams

I was under the impression that the knock sensors would retard the timing to keep it from pinging. In other words you could run 87 octane with no ping but lower performance than with 91/93 octane. You might get better performance and numbers with premium fuel.

I have a '03 Mach 1 and it has the Navagator cams and they do have more lowend than the Cobra. My '95 Mark VIII LSC dyno'ed at about 230 hp and 250'ish tq. All I had was a Superchip and Borla mufflers and it did a 14.6'ish at 97+ mph quarter-mile. My Mach I dyno'ed at 280hp/300tq.

RE: Went to dyno with Navi cams

Oh, I dynoed it with 93 pump. ;)

You're correct. The knock sensors would retard the timing if the ECU senses it. I haven't looked at the tune yet, but most tunes pull out 8-6 degrees < 1800 and once you get above 2400, it's only 5 degrees to redline.

You can also really feel it when it retards as well as I played with that hairly limit quite often in my Cobra when tuning. The car seems to loose a little power, suddenly. I know this as I always datalogged the cars I tune and ride that hairy line. I don't feel it at all in the Lincoln from partial to WOT to partial runs in 2nd (stock gear! ouch). In Nitrous cars, it's a BIG drop in power when it retards. Heh.

With minor bolt ons, I'm sure I can get a higher number. Also I dyno'd it in 80 degree weather without a cooldown! We were starving and ready for lunch. I asked the guy, "so how fast have you dyno'd a car before?" His record was 28 minutes from pull on to pull off.

We did it in 25 with 6 pulls, new record. I know I could have let it cool down for a while and got a bit higher numbers. I know I could have pulled the paper filter which has over 10k miles on it (dirty when I looked at it when I got home). But I wanted a real-world "what I get on the street when I run up against someone" dyno.

The engine was pretty warm (a bit warmer then normal driving, about 3/5ths up, closer to the redline, then cooler), and there was no rest of the engine. I did a pull, slowed it to a stop and let it idle for a few minutes and did the next pull. Heck, the best run we got was after we attempted two pulls without stopping (we messed up, and I didn't want to stop, we were in a hurry).

I might try to take it back as I know the guys, when the air is cool and I let the car sit for an hour or so to cool off. But I'm happy with the real-world numbers. It's a baseline anyhow before I swap in the new engine and whatever power adder I do this Winter.

It was actually mostly for the guys here that wanted to know the difference of the Navi cams then the stock cams. I got some 1/4 times and some dyno numbers, abeit the dyno numbers could have been pushed a little more. I'm trying to stress the point that they were down just a hair. A real dyno-day we could have seen a little more.

RE: Went to dyno with Navi cams

if you changes the plugs and stat you will have less retard.your car is restricted by the exhuast with headers and exhaust it will pull higher. with a cobra intake you will still have a restriction choking it up top. my mark with stock intake pulls pretty hard. also your car shoudl not be pulling out timing all the time.
