What exactly will a stall converter do for my Mark VIII?

I already installed 4.10 gears, track lock, and did the computer and a lot of people are telling me to go with a 3100 (or higher) converter.

What will this do? Is it something that I will only feel off of take off, or will it be like the computer/gears where I'd feel and notice it every time I hit the gas?

Like you, I had 4.10 gears, track-lok, chip and a bunch of other mods when I had the 3500 stall converter installed.

The first time I matted the throttle from a roll, it felt like the car literally jumped up and took off like a slingshot!

Below are the best numbers for one track event before the converter and one track event after...

60ft - 300ft - 1/8 - MPH - 1/4 - MPH

2.111 - 6.017 - 9.206 - 77.44 - 14.292 - 96.8

2.010 - 5.803 - 8.946 - 78.31 - 13.992 - 96.92

I think that pretty much sums it up. Make sure you have a good tranny cooler since the converter will add heat to the system.

A good converter will wake that engine right up and make the car feel lighter on take off.

You'll notice it more than the gears. The higher stall will alleviate the engine's weakness...low rpms.

I would suggest no less than 3800 stall for a markVIII. Talk to Bill at supercoupeperformance I'm sure he can get you a well built unit.

With EEC-V and a 4R70W can you lock up a 3800 stall converter at say 2000RPM in 4th gear? I am not sure what you can do as far as tuning with a converter and its electronic lockup. Anyone that can ellaborate on this? Gas milage is rather important to me, I like cruising places and I know a converter will kill my gas milage.

Yes. I forget the OEM lockup schedule but it is suprisingly very low rpms. If I run the stock tune on my '93, the car will buck when driving low speeds(say through town). A light tap on the brakes unlocks the converter and all is well.
