What is it?

I have a 95 Mark and just got a 96. The 96 has a 5 inch diameter cylinder behind the drivers side of the front bumper that connects to a vacuum controlled device in front of the engine crank pulley. What is this device? The 95 doesn't have it. Can I remove it?

RE: What is it?

96+ years had this device.

I never looked into what exactly it is, but I know ONE thing it does...

it gets in the way for turning the motor over manually when lining up the TC drain plug, or installing a torque converter.

I have read that it is an air pump that is incorporated with the emission system.

I think I read once that several gen 2 owners have removed it with no ill effects, but I cant confirm this...anyone?

RE: What is it?

Secondary A.I.R. valve that let's fresh air into the exhaust manifolds at start-up.

It's gotten in a way once too many times on my car, now it's GONE.

You have to leave the pump in the bumper plugged in and operational unless you switch it off in the chip.
