I am in the process of installing a NON computer controled engine in my 94 Mark VIII and I would like to remove the computer I also will be removing the air ride system but I would like to retain the antilock brakes IS THIS POSSIBLE?
if I removed the computer and it disabled the antilock brakes would the brake system operate as a normal brake system? any ideas would help thanks

RE: what would happen if? I removed the computer

I'm fairly sure it’s all tied together, simply because different variables observed by the ECU affect the systems, but I could be wrong.

RE: what would happen if? I removed the computer

if i leave the computer in the car what will the computer need to get data from? I will be replacing the transmission also will it need to read from the speedo?.... I really wold like to retain the antilocks but if I remove the computer will the brake system operate like a normal braking system with out antilocks I would think so for safety sake

RE: what would happen if? I removed the computer

If you are installing a motor that doesn't need the computer to run, just don't hook up the motor controls. Hook up everything else. The computer may freak because it is running and can't control anything. But the brakes should work. I'm not sure about the tranny.

I would bet that you would have to remove the Check engine lamp, ‘cause it would be forever on.

everthing will work excpet the stuf run by the comp, we did this to a 95 tbird w/ a 302 carbed motor

What is going to shift the trans?

isnt the trans still shifted by PCM on this model, 4r70w right?
You will at least need TPS and VSS and OSS connected if so or an electronic trans controller
Or swap in an AOD

RE: what would happen if? I removed the computer

Says he's also replacing the trans, I'd assume a C4, C6 or an AOD....so he probably wouldn't need a computer for that. Doesn't the ABS use a seperate computer much like the air ride?

RE: what would happen if? I removed the computer

You bet!

It's under and inboard of the battery tray, partially hidden in the front of the inner fender. On 1st Gens, ABS is a stand alone system so it's possible for it to continue functioning normally without any interaction with the PCM. On 2nd Gen OBDII vehicles, the ABS/TC module is fully integrated with all other modules in the multiplex network.

I've read the other posts in this thread and have seen the much more important issue raised: the transmission. An AOD or preferably a C6 is the only possible way to go without having valid TP, MAF, or CKP/RPM signals.

The other important question: Even if something went terribly wrong and ABS stopped functioning, you will always have normal braking.

By the way, this is not true of Mark VIIs. If the old "Teves" type ABS failed, you lost all brake assist!

Finally, if the PCM is removed or unplugged, the "check engine" light can't come on. It's an actuated output of the PCM.

thanks for all this Great info. I intend on installing a 347 stroker pushrod engine with a carb. and using a modifyed c-4 trans (to handle the power) and I will be replacing the air ride system with coil overs. and in general will be removing as much un needed stuff as I can to get the weight down like the power seats air conditioning rear seat power windows anything that beeps other than the horn and that annoying little screen that tells me my door is a jar LOL..
please dont be offended by any of this this car did its job but now its getting old " but we can rebuild it make it better faster stronger" I love the body style but for me simple is better
thanks for your help
