After my Tattoo thread sparked a bit of question over the life that Lincoln may or may not have within it, i want to turn this into an actual Thread.. Interesting thoughts a flyin in me head.
Lincoln is obviously spiraling down the deep dark pit of no return, a pit Cadillac, Mercedes, Buick, BMW and more have tossed themselves down and Hummer is slowly climbing into the made bed with them.
How to luxury car companies end up in this hole? Well, to be frank they begin to lose faith in their product or become to competitive, they overprice, they under quality, or (most importantly and commonly), They begin to appeal to the middle class. Luxury cars are not made for the middle class. Period. Once they become available to Mrs and Mr Natural Fibers they become common, they become too AVAILABLE.
Lincoln has been successful for SO MANY YEARS because they have been, ultimately, out of the reach of the middle class. Their off the lots are too expensive, and their older used luxury cars are too ¨bulky and outdated¨ for the Brady Bunch, so you would have seldom found a Lincoln parked in a suburban parking lot.
When Lincoln released the Navigator and Mark LT, they started putting themselves out there to the point where they became boring, they became old, they became gas-guzzling and outdated. They no longer contained the centerpiece for conversations or stairs from jealous neighbors. They became.. Just another car.
This happened with Cadillac that ultimately sealed their death note, the last thing that bloody company has left is the Escalade, and even that has not been preforming so well on the sales charts lately (Over all, you knew it was over for them when they released a freakin bike.).
Lincolns have forever been known as being... luxury. For being decedent and expensive and tasteful. Even te circulating older models are still so.. unique.
Now, obviously all these luxury car companies are crapping in their suits because of the whole recession, and they are trying to appeal to a wider audience to try and stay on their feet. What did Lincoln do to attempt this?
They made a Toyota Corolla.... with a shiny grill and 30 thousand dollar price tag.
Lincoln has now accepted the fact that they are not all they used to be and are now desperately begging the suburban families that sealed their fate, to buy their cars (just like Hummer). ¨Look, we are getting rid of the town car! We are still hip and fresh!¨
Lincoln is axing their premier product and the rest of their cars have become available and common and boring... So.. I ask the Lincoln community: What Would You do to save Lincoln?
I, PERSONALLY, Would axe the Mark LT, Keep the Town Car (obviously), re-release the continental concept (losing some of those crazy features, of course), either lose the Zephyr or the MKS (they look the bloody same) and steal their cars back from all the whiny baby boomers in ¨Oak Price Estates¨.
