Why is my tranny doing this.

I was driving and I wasnt even smashing the pedal. It wasnt even close to the floor anyways( it was maybe half way ), I hit Second and "Chirp" plus TC was on. Why is my tranny doing this. This is not the first time, When Im WOT it when it shifts it doesnt bark it spins the tires a little bit. Dont get me wrong I love it but is it hurting my baby. My first mark never did this never even came close. Could it be a freak of the OEM or could the old man I bought it from did a 1-2 upgrade or shift kit.

Actually Bradd, It is probably becouse your car did not have the 1-2 upgrade. The little piston inside of it get's caught causing the pressure to build. When it let's loos, it slam's into second gear. At least that is the problem that mine had. It would not do it all the time, just when it got twisted a little bit. I could be way off, but nobody has replied so I figured that I would give it a shot.

Thanks but would it be bad because in an auto you want it to shift fast and hard.

If the 1-2 accumulator piston sticks, it will score the bore and start bypassing fluid past the o-ring seal. When that happens, shifts will start being late, slipping excessively or no shift at all in extreme cases.

Have you upgraded the 1-2 accumulator?

No 1-2 that I know of, But it aint slipping thats for sure

IMHO, upgrade the 1-2 accumulator, the 2-3 accumulator, optional J-mod on the valve body gaskets, check the valve body bolt torque, replace fluid with Mercon V and of course install a good tranny cooler.

My '93 shifted 1-2 hard at WOT and I suspected a broken spring. I was right, and did the above except for the 2-3 accumulator and J-mod.

Ok I got mercon 5 and I found a huge old hayden tranny cooler in my house so i will install that. But what about the 1-2 and how much would a shop cost.

The 1-2 upgrade is very easy, all you need to know is how to operate a snap ring pliers thing. If you plan on changing the filter go ahead and change the 1-2 accumulator, it's cheap too especially since you like the hard shifts, because you can leave out the bottom spring, the $32 one, i think the rest of the parts for the 1-2 are under $20 all together. check out http://mark8.org/users/JackDonkey/ and you can see some pics from when I changed my 1-2 I also did the j-mod that's why the valve body is off, but you won't have to worry about that. My lower 1-2 spring was broke in one place as shown in the pic.

Thanks I will do it soon before I get the chip next week because my dumb ass put a cork casket in instead of the OEM. So its dripping a bit and it will more with the chip.

I did mine with the car on a set of jackstands. It's really nothing to be intimidated by. You can reuse the OEM rubber gasket BTW. Just make sure to pin the gasket properly in place with the pan bolts. You may want to think of installing a drain plug kit to facilitate future fluid changes. That way you only need to pull the drain plug in the pan and the plug in the torque converter to fully drain the transmission fluid.

I installed one of thsoe drain plug pans, what a great idea. it came with a new gasket but that gasket had to be changed only 10,000 mi later :/
