Winter tires

I just bought a 95 Mark VIII and was wondering what size/brand of winter tire people recommend.

RE: Winter tires

Hey! A fellow Canadian! Let me tell you my experiences, since we live in the same area.

First of all, I live in Pickering and work at a Ford/Lincoln dealership in Mississauga. I do that drive in my Mark every day, 12 months of the year, for the last four years.( For everyone else, suffice to say it's a round trip of ~80 miles A DAY.) I need to trust my car in the winter.

A background story: about 6 years ago my wife lost control of her Mustang in a freak late April snow storm. The car was destroyed. She was cut out of it by the fire department, spent months immobilized, and was told she'd never walk again. Well, she can, and she drives too, but she was terrified of driving in snow after that. For her birthday 3 years ago, I gave her a gift of enrolment in a two day skid control course to bring her confidence back. (www.skidcontrolschool.com --you should check it out. They have their own slip pad, they use cars with tricked up ABS on which the instructors can lock or unlock individual wheels to force skids on the pad.) Off-the-record, they recommended Goodyear UltraGrips.

I went out and bought four for her Continental because I'd also heard great things about them.

Luke, I was so impressed I put four more on my Mark and this fall put four more on my sister's new VW Beetle. In all cases, I used the stock tire size.

I went to work today in the big storm and was in full control the whole time. (Again, for everyone else, the Toronto area just got 10" of snow that turned into freezing rain and sheet ice.)

As a real kicker to this, my dealership services the cruisers for Ontario Provincial Police, Port Credit Division. The OPP standardized tire usage across the province and are now using Goodyear UltraGrips!

This fall, we put them on every cruiser.

RE: Winter tires

IMHO the best pure winter tires are the bridgestone blizzaks. I have a set on the mark, and since then have never had a problem (and I just got 20 inches here in dayton) I've been giving my FWD friends a lift because they can't move.

RE: Winter tires

I have cooper winter tires in front (stock size) and the SMALLEST BFG all-terrain k0's I could buy, 225/70/16 on the back. These tires in combination with a limited slip differential are great. I've driven in about 9 inches of snow in the road with these and the only problem I had the was the front of the car snow plowing. Although I'm sure putting the coopers in back too would have been just fine, I just wanted something a bit different.

RE: Winter tires

Hey there Frankie: Glad you made it safely through that mess yesterday. It would be good to meet you some day. I'm just down the road about 15 minutes in Oshawa.

Have a great Christmas. Oh, oh... It's the 24th and I have no beer! Off I go to join the line up...

Cheers to one and all...

RE: Winter tires

Oh, I made it OK, but it took me two hours to get to work! The roads were full of stupid people doing stupid things, unprepared and unskilled. There's a very specific type: last year, about this time, they were back in their sunny home country, hitting their donkeys with sticks if they wanted to go faster. Now they're here in Canada driving their first cars in the first snow they've ever seen.

Of course we'll get together. Stay in touch on the Ontario Chapter board.

RE: Winter tires

Thanks, guys!

I got a good deal on a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks (215/60/16s) - apparently the last ones in the city - and 200+ lbs of sand in the trunk. Good to go! I'll Definately be joining the Ontario Chapter.

Luke.

RE: Winter tires

Good job on the Blizzaks. What rims do you have on your 95? Lacy spokes or otherwise. I put my winter tires on "winter rims" to mimimize the abuse on my chrome summer rims. The spare wheels paid for themselves easily. You can get some used Taurus rims pretty cheap for your winter tires.

RE: Winter tires

I've got the stock alloy directionals on the 95 now. The shop I got the tires at didn't have any steel winter rims...When I pick up new summer tires in the spring I'll throw the blizzaks on somthing else to preserve my alloys. Know where I can get any used Taurus rims around the GTA?

RE: Winter tires

I did a 360 degree spin on the Southern State in the rain two weeks before Christmas. This was at about 30mph on two year old Goodyear Eagle RS-A with less than 15,000 miles on them. I felt like I was on ice, but it definitely was too warm for that. I had been noticing the traction control light had been coming on more frequently in the past few months when the road was wet. I tires have plenty of thread, but I think they dried out. I was lucky that no one hit me when I spun out and there was no damage to the car.

I was planning to use my 5-year-old Goodyear UltraGrip tires in the following week for the winter, but now I was afraid they were also dried out. I did not want to risk the car or me on those old tires, even though they also had plenty of thread left.

I researched tires at 1010tires.com and tirerack.com. I had originally planned to buy four Goodyear Ultragrip Ice tires in the stock 225/60R16 size, but in all of North America, only 1010tires.com had them, but unfortunately, they only had three of them.

I finally settled on Michelin Pilot Alpin snow tires for the winter. So far in the few snow and ice storms we have had, they are terrific. For a snow tire they have good ride. Plus they are much quieter than previous snow tires I have owned. Still they are little louder than all season tires.

In the Spring, I need to decide on which tires I will use in the summer.

RE: Winter tires

We're all glad to hear you're ok after that spin. I'm very satisfied with the Pilot Alpins. I did switch the front and rears around this year though, as there was some obvious wear especially on the passenger rear. That was after two winters though. All is good so far this year.
