Wiper motor

Hello,
I have a 1998 Town Car Executive and the windshield wipers just stop working. I was wondering if anyone has ever changed a motor and how difficult it is. If it is not too hard, could someone give me a detaied description of how to do it? Thanks.

Wiper Motor


Removal and Installation


1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Refer to «Section 14-01».

2. Remove windshield wiper «Mounting Arm and Pivot Shaft» as outlined(below).



3. Unsnap and remove windshield wiper motor and linkage cover (17C569).

4. Remove windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft retaining clip from windshield wiper motor output arm (17A436) by lifting locking tab and pulling clip away from pin.



5. CAUTION: The internal permanent magnets used in the windshield wiper motor are a ceramic (glass-like) material. Care must be exercised in handling the windshield wiper motor to avoid damaging the magnets. The windshield wiper motor must not be struck or tapped with a hammer or other object.

Remove retaining screws and remove windshield wiper motor.

6. To install, reverse Removal procedure.

Mounting Arm and Pivot Shaft


Removal and Installation


1. Note: Windshield wiper mounting arms and pivot shafts are not separately serviceable. Windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shafts (17566) must be replaced as an assembly (less windshield wiper motor (17508)).

Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to «Section 14-01».

2. Remove «Windshield Wiper Arms» as outlined.

3. Remove cowl vent screens (018A17). Refer to «Section 01-02».

4. Disconnect window washer hose (17408) from windshield washer nozzle jet and bracket (17603).

5. Remove nuts retaining vapor management valve.

6. Remove windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft retaining bolts. Lift windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft upward.

7. Disconnect windshield wiper motor output arm.

8. Remove windshield wiper motor.

9. To install, transfer windshield wiper motor to new windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft and reverse Removal procedure.
