Worm Trouble!

Well...it finally got me! I received an email from "Microsoft.com" titled "Use this patch immediately!" I should have known it wasn't really from Microsoft when I opened the email and there wasn't anything "official" looking in the email. It had an attachment titled patch.exe plus another one that I think was text or something else. Like a DUMMY, I opened the attachment. Nothing happened...or so I thought. I got a popup from my Zone Alarm asking if vxe.mgr could access the internet. Again, not thinking, I said yes. Next thing I know my Norton outgoing email scan is getting bombed. It stopped all 8 of them before they were sent and quarantined the program before it could try to send more. It turned out to be the Dumaru worm. I opened and used the removal tool on the Symantec site and it removed the worm successfully. Do not open any attachments from "Microsoft". Their site says that if they are sending emails, it will only refer you to the site or link the site.
Sorry this is so long, but I didn't want anyone else to have to go thru this.

RE: Worm Trouble!

Thanks for the heads up Marcia. I haven't had anything weird here at home, but our office network has been hit hard with viruses lately.

RE: Worm Trouble!

Thanks Marcia. I had to go cure my mother-in-laws machine last week. She's under the naive beleif that she has to open and reply to every email she gets. Needless to say she gets lots of surprises, nothing like an 84 yo prim and proper lady after viewing a lesbian oriented photo.

RE: Worm Trouble!

If you have Norton anti-virus set up on your computer, you should have it set to automatically update itself daily and to scan all incoming email messages. This is the default setting. This way it would have stopped the virus before your computer could get infected.

I get an average of 5 viruses sent to me a day. It down from a peak of 24 a few months ago.

RE: Worm Trouble!

It's funny you should mention that Alexander. My norton antivirus never picked it up and I update regularly. When I started to have a problem witht he worm I ran a full system scan. Norton was unable to remove or even quarantine the virus. I went to the website for an update and still had no luck. Finally I went to microsoft and they had a patch.

RE: Worm Trouble!

Same here! It is set up to scan incoming and outgoing emails. For whatever reason, it got through. Add ZoneAlarm firewall to the mix also...and it still got me. I think in this instance, I got myself! :+

RE: Worm Trouble!

I scanned my computer for the Dumaru worm using the Symantec tool. Luckily the scan was negative.

Does anyone know why viruses/worms get through antivirus programs? Is it because some are now sent directly to the IP, bypassing e-mail.
