Yet Another JBL Question

Ok guys, I'm new here, and just picked up a '94 with 87,000 original on it. It has the JBL, with the phone and changer. I realized that the JBL speakers are actually decent when they work, hit and miss. A friend of mine had a '94 SHO with JBL, and gave me the amp bypass harnesses for aftermarket headunits, but will this work with the JBL? I've been reading up and from what I've seen, all of the woofers and tweeters in this car are bi-amplified from the JBL amp, thus hindering my ablilty to easily hook up an aftermarket deck, is this for sure true? Reason I am doing this is because of the dreaded popping noise followed by degrading sound quailty when I turn the volume up slightly. I also loose the right channel if I turn the bass up even to the half-way mark, any suggestions?

RE: Yet Another JBL Question

Welcome! :)

It's possible the head unit is the cause of your problems and the JBL amplifier may be fine. I propose swapping with a known good unit would be the quickest way to ascertain the source of the problem.

RE: Yet Another JBL Question

Thanks! I thought about that, but my friend works at an electronics store that is closing, so I'm getting the $1500 Eclipse touchscreen unit for next to nothing, plus my changer skips like a madman, and I want to plug the eclipse into the factory speakers without too much work. I am pretty well versed in stereos, and I have about 3K into the sound sys in my GTP, (Not the "bump" but high end Diamond Audio equip. just fyi.) So does the simple amp bypass cable work? or am I screwed stuck with wiring in bass blockers (i.e. simple crossovers) in line while hacking up the factory wiring, which I hate doing.

RE: Yet Another JBL Question

Hey man i just put an after market system in my 89 mark vii myself i there is 2 ways that you can do it you can run the sub's off of the back speaker then clip in the clip but i found when that you do that when you turn up the volume you get good bass but bad distortion from the back JBL'S so i suggest wire the sub from the orignal amp in the car thats what i got right now i got 2 audiobahn 12's wired from my stock amp hope that will help you out dude

RE: Yet Another JBL Question

I put an Alpine head unit in my '93 with the JBL system. I found out the hard way that the JBL amp didn't like the extra power (lost channels, random popping). What ended up happening was a total elimination of the stock speakers, wiring, and amp. Sure, I could have just thrown another stock amp in, and bought a head unit with less power, but I wouldn't have the sound quality I was looking for.

RE: Yet Another JBL Question

Your problem sounds like my 93 used to then it got worse so I tryed the one from Drillers car and it worked fine so, I would go to a junk yard and find one from a ford car or truck and plug it in and try it

On the same subject, are there any head units that will work with the OE changer?

None that I know of - I looked. Seems most if not all CD changers are proprietary.

RE: Yet Another JBL Question

Thanks guys. I ended up going with an aftermarket Eclipse fold-out DVD player, still using the JBL amp and speakers. Sounds pretty good, but I will be putting my Diamond S600 components in the front, and probably some Diamond M3 components in the rear as soon as I can get it all out of my GTP. By the way, the Hi-Level wiring adaptor from Scosche works fine, plug and play with the factory JBL, haven't popped any speakers or lost any channels yet!!!!

RE: Yet Another JBL Question

I am going through the same problems. Wired the aftermarket head unit up and its running with no sound from the speakers. I have talked to the local stereo places and the all say that they would just run the speaker wires straight to the head unit, but then i was told that the impedence on the jbl speakers was so low that they are prone to blow. There was an aftermarket amp and subs hooked up when the inside speakers cut out, and the subs were still going. I bought an amplifier bypass harness from BestBuy and it connected the wrong two harnesses (large two, leaving the square one alone(which come to find out is the speakers)). So i'm wondering what the odds of the Scosche bypass harness on their page will solve my problem, or lead to more. The picture of it looks like it would connect the correct plugs, but i dont want to waste any more money if i'm going to have to replace the speakers of factory amp. I'm really anxious to hook up my Xplode 10s and 12s...but need some highs first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nate
