Upgraded factory radio in my 97 Mark VIII LSC with JBL Premium Audio

Correct, peak is 52 x 4 but only when it's cranked. I never get it that high due to all that distortion. My Sony has RCA outputs for an amp hookup but the JBL amp doesn't have RCA inputs to receive the signal from the Sony head unit.

What to do?

I guess the key thing is to find out what sort of signal is between the factory head unit and the JBL amp. When I last had a factory Bose system, the head unit put out line level audio (just not with RCA connectors) so it would be much easier to wire in an aftermarket head. On the other hand it's conceivable that FLM used the same head units between JBL and non-JBL stereos to save money, which would mean the JBL takes speaker-level inputs. I don't know if this is the case, but it could be a possibility....

No Gonzo, I did not get over to the Eastern Shore to see the G.M. Orchestra. Maybe someday .........

Can't you simply rewire the outputs to whatever the inputs are to the factory amp is? Or use adapters? I think all kinds of adapters are made today in audio,

He could, but you obviously want to start off with the cleanest source possible, which will by far be preamp level, especially if he already hears distortion with the sony's built in amp.

I pulled the radio to get to the Scosche SLC-4 converter and played around with those setting screws a bit. Doing that and re-setting the low pass filter along with the high pass filter helped a bit, it doesn't distort much anymore. I swapped out the rear 5x7 JBL paper cone speakers with Infinity Kappa 6x8 speakers. I only need to do the doors but I don't want to mess too much with removing the door panels. I removed the driver's side speaker grille and I could see the speaker behind it, but there's just no way to wiggle the speaker through there. I'll just have to tackle the door panel removal. I did it a couple of times in my 97 Thunderbird but I never liked how they "fit" when I put them back on. Hopefully it'll be better on the Mark!

There is a better sound coming from the back since I removed the stock JBL speakers. These Infinity speakers are great! Thanks for your help and replies!

Good to hear. It sounds like maybe you reach your listening level before it has to distort. Good luck with the door panels; they can be a pain but be patient and go slow.

I searched and will follow the instructions in post #2 in this thread from June 2007:

http://lincolnsofdistinction.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=15982

<< Carefully pry the little black triangle off the upper front of the panel. Carefully take the courtesy light lens off. Look under the armrest for a small rectangle and remove it. Remove the bolt behind the rectangle, and the screw from behind the lens. Remove the doorhandle cup from behind the inner door handle - pry gently behind the forward lip. Slip the entire panel straight up about 2", and it should be loose except for the wire connections. >>

When you connected the factory wiring harness adapters...were the wires from Sony the same color as the Scosche harness adapters? Thanks, Rod 1997 Base Mark VIII

Rod - I can't really remember but I think they were, I'll agree with izackary.

What I do recall was looking at the Sony speaker output wires (they are labeled and also indicated on the directions) and matching them to the speaker wires indicated for the Scosche adapter on the instruction paper. I mated them one-by-one and used electrical tape instead of the shrink tubing solely because I wanted the option to use the adapters again in case I wanted to change/upgrade the Sony stereo in the future.

I still don't know the power output wattage of the JBL amp but it doesn't matter to me anymore, the amp failed a few days ago and it just rumbles every time I turn the radio on. Since the Sony head unit has internal amplification I'm going to re-wire it and simply take the JBL amp out of the equation.

Am I the only one who drives a lincoln, who listens to metal? :D
I do listen to Rush, Jethro Tull, and early Foreigner (when they rocked before they turned to sap), among others. On Sirius satellite I favor the Classic Rock stations, as well as HOWARD! But I also listen to Siriusly Sinatra, 40s on 4, 60s on 6, and 70s on 7.
