98 Navigator will not engage 4X4 front axle

Problem turned out to be a defective vacuum solenoid. There are 2 solenoids mounted a common bracket on the firewall to the left of the power distribution area and right behind the battery. The right solenoid (E8AE-9H465-AA) controls the vacuum to the return side of axle engagement diaphram...

98 Navigator will not engage 4X4 front axle

Thanks Driller ... I'll try that tomorrow. It could be that the solenoid is stuck always open. I did not check to see if it switches vacuum on & off with 12 volts applied and disconnected directly.

98 Navigator will not engage 4X4 front axle

Yeah .... I had already planned that was my fall-back solution once the snow comes. Yes, the 98 does have the same transfer case clutch set up for A4WD so that the 4X4 is switched in as needed. The downside is that I will loose gas mileage with axles engaged all the time. Too bad they...

98 Navigator will not engage 4X4 front axle

Hi Guys Any suggestions for my 98 Navigator that will not engage the front axle for 4 wheel drive in either A4WD, 4X4 or Low Range ? The diaphram unit on the front axle works fine. If you connect vacuum to either side of the diaphram it will engage or disengage the the 4 front axle correctly...

Hard to start when below 32 degrees

Hey guys .... any thoughts ????? When the air temp is below 32 degrees my Gen2 is very hard to start. Crank, crank, crank all it does is stumble like it's firing on just a couple cylinders. If you hold it to the floor it will finally start, but will not idle till it warms up for 5 minutes or...

    put my gears in...

Hi Dave If you change the Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS) gear, commonly referred to as the speedo gear, you will correct your problem of the tranny shifting at 5,000 rpm. On Gen2 cars the speedometer gets its input from the left front ABS sensor. The OSS feeds the Powertrain Control Module...

what speedo gear do i need?

The speedometer on Gen2 cars gets its input from the left front ABS sensor. Consequently, changing the rear end gear ratio does not effect the speedometer reading. You will, however, still need to change what is commonly called the speedo gear on the transmission output shaft sensor. This...

    Gen2 rev limiter question

Hey Guys Anyone else seen this or am I the only victim ???? My rev limiter does not cut in when I shift manually. (found out on a manual downshift that pegged the tach) Works fine when letting the tranny shift itself, but will rev right up to 7000 (and beyond I assume) in first, second and...

    GEAR SWAP

Failure to change the OSS (output Shaft Speed Sensor) gear, commonly referred to as the speedo gear, will cause your tranny to shift at around 5200 rpm with 3.73's and even lower with 4.10's. On Gen1 cars this will also affect the speedometer reading. On Gen2 cars the speedometer gets its...

    Baumann Kit

In practice I think you will find it to be lot cheaper just to buy everything you need from FiveStar Ford and do the 300 -450 HP Jerry Mod. Here are the prices for a Gen2: XW7Z-7D100-AA Separator Plate Gasket $1.46 1L3Z-7C155-AA Separator Plate Gasket $1.78 F7aZ-7F251-AA 1/2 Accumulator...

What's involved in a Cobra intake swap

I made the swap about 2 months ago. Went pretty much as expected, given the extensive rearch that I did prior to digging in. Dan Rotolante and Robman2 provided some great step by step procedures and Max at Five Star Ford provided an assembly drawing which really prepped me for what I was...
