They started to use the black knob with the chrome button in all 1995 and up models. My 1996 base had one and I just picked up one from a 95 in the junkyard to use on my 94.

Did you try turning the steering wheel? It may sound nutty, but I have had the same thing happen before on several cars when the wheel locks in a certain position.
