when i use the cassette adapter for my ipod. the radio only plays on the right hand speakers and i try to balance the sound and i cant hear any sound on the left hand speakers. this only happens when the adapter is plugged in and is fine when the radio is in use. ive tried cleaning it and i dont know what else to do, e

My 97 Continental had the same problem...although I can't help you out, as I never found a fix. I just assumed it was a bad head in the tape player.

Sounds like it's a common problem then....but since it works like normal on radio, I'm assuming its a defective tape deck. It sucks but it might be time to go aftermarket.

Try a different casette adapter. If the head in the adapter doesn't line up perfectly with the head in the deck, you'll encounter this problem. I had to go through three or four before I found one that would work in my Mark. Interestingly enough, the "sony" ones were the worst of the bunch. I think the winner was a cheapie.. I have seen a few of the adapters with a little "switch" on the side so you can fine-tune this. your mileage may vary.

Also, is this an ipod, in a case? I've seen a number of cases that don't allow a regular headphone connecter to go all the way into the jack, causing the same result.

Cassette Adapter

Here's the one that works in my Mark VIII.
Of particular interest, is the small geared rubber roller visible through the bottom. If I recall correctly, this was the main difference between this unit, and the others I tried that did not work. I think the Sony had some sort of a "belt" in the same location.
