Bell rings when cell get plugged into charger

I bought my 2000 LS second-hand and have had it for about 7 months. Whenever I plug my cell into a charger cord (plugged into the cigarette lighter port), a bell dings very loudly 4 times, and does this ringing thing 4 times (16 dings) and then quits. Nothing comes up in the status message area and I can't find anything about this in the owner's manual. It isn't equipped with the factory "phone", although the button for it is on the dash. Any clue why the bell dings or how to make it quit? It's very loud and very annoying!

Well, the four chimes has me stumped. I've seen other references to five chimes being notification that the air bag failure light is out, so I'd be tempted to start there.

When you first turn the key to run, you should see all of the dash lights illuminate for a moment. Check to see if the air bag light illuminates as well. If it has failed (or has been removed) you'll get a chime.

Now why this appears to be related to a load on your cigarette lighter plug, I have no idea. :) I can tell you with certainty that the lighter plug is "power only" so you don't have to worry about any sort of cellular integration technology. The car's potentially ever having a factory phone is not a factor.

I'd guess it's either conveniently timed but entirely unrelated, or perhaps a partial short in your cell phone and/or charger. (but normally, that would just blow a fuse..)

I'd rule out that air bag light first. I know for a fact that will cause the car to chime..

Since it's only doing it when you plug the cell phone in, I'd suspect that something's wrong with the plug or the lighter socket. Have you looked inside the socket to see if there's any debris? I know nothing about LS's but I believe they have some sort of digital bus system that monitors the electrical system. If the plug is causing a short, the system might be fooled into thinking some other component is bad, causing a warning chime. Just a guess.
