Exhaust/CEL help???

My CEL has been on since getting the car and it's a catalytic converter code. I noticed the 3rd CC was taken out and the exhaust looks like it was put on with bubble gum. I have a base and previous owner put the LSC exhaust on it very poorly. Never looked at it until yesterday and I think it is probably leaking in more than one spot. I believe this could be the root cause of my car stalling out when my gas gets around a quarter tank as well as being sluggish. I would like all new piping and mufflers. What would you guys recommend as far as the brand of mufflers? Would that make my CEL go away or would I have to put the 3rd CC back on?

The 3rd (or mid) cat is frequently removed and will not throw a code. Leaks will also rarely throw codes or cause stalling. Let's start with you listing what codes are you getting?

Engine Misfire. Catalytic converter defective. Engine oil leakage into exhaust-valve guide seals, piston rings. Large vacuum leak is all on the receipt they printed me. Guy at Autozone told me to have a friend put their hand over the exhaust and rev it to 1000 RPM and if it doesn't blow their hand back then that means your CC is bad.

The guy at Autozone!....sounds like you went to a witch doctor. An unqualified (and likely un trained) person sure did make allot of conclusions based on 2 codes. I would say we should start over with this analysis.

3rd cat.jpg3rd cat-2.jpg3rd CC? I was reading my gen 1 manual and can't find a 3rd CC. I know everebody thinks #3 is a cc, but the book says not. #6 is cc, and it says 2 required. Boy am I confused.

it is number 3 in that diagram, says it is a y pipe converter, since it is down stream of the rear O2s it was debatable if it was part of the emission system or exhust system, IIRC it does have the honeycomb cat material in it and used to help reduce emissions for start up.

I just put everything that was on the receipt for the codes. He circled the engine misfire one and catalytic converter defective (failure possibly due to 2, 3 or 4). 2 is engine misfire, 3 is large vacuum leak and 4 is engine oil leakage into exhaust. I have noticed that the engine smells like oil after driving it this past week. I looked under the car a week ago and could see a couple drops. Haven't noticed anything on the ground this past couple days though. I was told that if I want to replace the passenger CC that I will probably need a new manifold also.

I went to a muffler shop and found the right guy. He agreed to replace all from cats to the tailpipe. I'm ordering a mandrel system, and magnaflows. He couldn't find any parts for my 95. How bad can he be, he drives a TC. He agreed that that's a Y pipe since there is no O2 sensor in it.

I have a friend who frequently salvages CC's from many vehicles and parts out M8's. He said #3 has CC material in it and he gets the same salvage value based on it's weight. Although it is not a full CC.

yup, basically what i said, it is an un-monitored cat so you won't get any OBDII codes if you remove it. Think it just helps with pollution on cold start ups. Back when NJ did the dyno emission testing my Mark ran very clean without it, they only do the test on a warmed up car.
