Factory Stereo Amp problems

Hello,
I have a 1993 mark VIII and have the factory cassette deck installed. I can hear the radio for about a minute then it cuts out. I bought a cd player from my friend and we used a ford/Lincoln wiring harness to try to hook it up. We got no sound. I am assuming that the amp is bad and was wondering how to bypass it. My friend said he thinks its under the console and under the center of the dash. Anyone have any suggestions on this please? Thank you!

The amp is under the package tray in the rear window. You access it by laying on your back in the trunk. Lying on your back and looking up is a screw on your right hand side that needs removed and the unit should slide out.

It's quite easy to run your own wires to the speakers too.
