Hello, again

Well I figured I might as well post here in the New User area, even though I am technically not a new user. It's just been years since I have been on here. I sincerely doubt that anyone would remember me.

I own a black 94 Mark VIII that I spent some time and money on to get it to perform decently at the drag strip. I could do consistent 12.30s and my best time was an 11.98. I had some heart troubles (4 heart attacks actually) and a combination of what that did to me and the medications I was on pretty much kept me from turning a wrench on anything, so I sort of faded away into oblivion. The Mark VIII sat, was driving some, and lots of stuff broke on it. I bought a Town Car, and another project car that I ever so slowly worked on...

Then one day I got tired of messing around and had the entire power train pulled out of the Mark VIII and refreshed. The VIII is just a shell now, having donated all the remaining working bits to this new project... which is to move the 4.6 Teksid to it's new home, my 1967 Thunderbird.

The reason I am back on here is twofold. First off if anyone is interested in the build and how it is progressing, it would thrill me to no end to share. Secondly, it's been two whole years now since I have seen a completed 4.6 quad valve sitting in a real working Mark VIII and my memory is beginning to fade regarding certain details of how things attached, etc. So I am hoping to be able to ask some questions to current Mark VIII owners.

In case anyone cares, I am going to try to attach some photos of the Mark VII in its prime, and the car that everything is going into.

Welcome Back, Devin!

We're glad to see you back in action, and I for one, am looking forward to the build thread on your T-Bird. Although these drivetrains seem to be a pretty popular upgrade for many machines, we so rarely get to see it done. I'd definitely encourage the effort.

Definitely like a good progress thread regarding any Mark VIII's. Even if you are putting it in to another car.

Welcome back Devin. I love those T birds. What engine did it have originally, and how much did the car weigh?

It originally had a 390. There was a 428 option that year, although it was really the same FE engine with different heads (as I understand it). The engine that was in the car had been freshly rebuilt, but anyone that knows about FE motors understands that while it would deliver oodles of torque, it didn't develop horsepower well. I looked into doing what it would take to crank the stock motor up to something acceptable, and the cost v performance ratio just wasn't there. When I dyno'd the Tbird with the 390 in it it was putting out 320 foot pounds of torque and only 152 horsepower to the rear wheels. You could breathe on the pedal and it would spin the wheels but the car totally fell on it's face after the launch.

I have no idea how much that motor actually weighed. I DO know that a simple intake manifold swap to an aluminum intake would save SIXTY POUNDS. After I pulled the engine the nose of the car looked like it was trying to take off, it was standing on the ends of the shock towers. After the 4.6 was fitted in it, it STILL looked that way. Even now after doing work to level the front and back, it still stands just a touch high in the front.

So since the Tbird was 4200 pounds from the factory, I suspect a lot of that was engine weight. I have to imagine that I have saved a considerable amount of weight by going over to the 4.6. I have also pulled out all the airco components (all bad anyway) and compressor, etc. Once the car is actually done I will weigh it, but my estimate is that the final product will be right around the 4000 pound mark. So heavier than the Mark VIII but lighter than, say, a modern Camaro or Challenger.

I have a few questions regarding the board.

1) Should I start some kind of build thread? Where would I put it?

2) I seem to only be able to have 158K of photos or some such allocated to me... how do I get more photos on here?

We have an "Other Vehicles" sub forum, where I have my model T build thread that would be a good spot.

As far as the pictures I suggest a paid membership so the pictures upload directly to LOD, but if you opted not to alot of the guys use "flicker" to host the image and insert the address in the thread.

If you do pay for a membership you get 1000 PM space and unlimited space for pictures. Plus you help support the LOD community, which many rely on for information.

Welcome back! :)

Paid members are allowed to post pics as 'attachments' which are hosted on the server as a membership perk.

Or pics can be hosted on a public website (free or paid) and linked to as an image file.

A "build thread" would be most welcome! I suggest the "Non-Lincoln Car Discussion" sub-forum. http://www.lincolnsofdistinction.org/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?43-Non-Lincoln-Car-Discussion

What's 2nd gear top out at? It looked like it was close to 100?
It's been probably 4 years since it went down a track, but if I recall correctly it shifted into 3rd at around 70-75. I do recall once not turning the OD off and it shifting into OD right as I hit the end of the quarter, which was roughly 108-110.
