Key and RKE question...

Ok, under the heading of PLEASE HELP... :D

I just picked up a 01' Conti... and it's a sweet ride.

Unfortunately the car only has 1 ignition key, and no keyless entry remotes. So I just bought a new ignition key, and 2 coded i.e. driver 1, driver 2, remotes.

So, how do I program all this crap? I tried to program the key the same way you would program a 2nd Gen MK8 key, but it didn't work.

Anyway I'd like not to get soaked at the dealer for $85/hr to program all this crap if I can avoid it.

Also, has anyone ever know an outer keypad to only half work? It seems like the first 2 buttons don't do anything, they won't activate the interior lights, or the keypad lights, but the last 3 buttons seem to work fine.

Thanks! -J :D

With "LOD" Since 1997
Key Programming —Additional Key With One Programmed Key

Special Tool(s) Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS)
418-F224,

New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester
418-F052, or equivalent scan tool

NOTE: This procedure is used when a customer needs to have an additional key programmed into the vehicle without erasing stored key codes, but does not have two programmed keys available. This procedure is also useful when attempting to determine if an ignition key is defective, as a new key can be installed without erasing keys or without having two programmed keys available.

NOTE: Before programming, the new key must have the correct mechanical cut for the ignition lock.

NOTE: If eight keys are already programmed, this procedure will not allow any further ignition keys to be programmed without erasing all stored key codes first. The number of keys programmed into the system can be determined using the PID NUMKEYS.

Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the RUN position using the new, unprogrammed ignition key.
Enter scan tool using the Ford Service Function (FSF) card and enter the appropriate instrument cluster. Follow Security Access to obtain security access. For additional information, refer to Security Access—Procedure .
From the scan tool menu Select: IGNITION KEY CODE PROGRAM.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect scan tool.
Attempt to start the engine with the new ignition key. The vehicle engine should start and run normally

Well why the hell couldn't it be easy like the 2nd Gen MK8s...

Looks like it's time to call the dealer... an hour labor has to be cheaper then buying all those scan things... x(

Thanks Steve! -J :7

Dear lord, no wonder you've been too busy to call me. (that's some nice Jewish guilt there...) :*

You've got three issues here:
1. If you only have one programmed key you have no choice but to use WDS or NGS scan tools to program the second key. Bite the bullet and let the dealership do it. What would be the point of an encryption based security system if anyone could do the coding any time they wanted to? After you have two coded keys, the vehicle owner can code as many more as they want, up to a maximum of eight. That procedure is in the owner's manual.

2. The remotes are easy to program. Cycle the ignition from off to run (not start) eight times within ten seconds, ending in run. This puts the RKE module in "learn" mode. If you were successful, the doors will lock and unlock one time to indicate this. Within five seconds, press ANY button on remote #1. The locks will pop up and down again if the RKE learned the remote. Within another five seconds, press ANY button on #2. The same thing should happen. Turn the key off. Done!

3. It's not uncommon to see one or more numeric buttons fail on a five-button keypad. Replace the whole pad. It's your only choice.

Thanks for that info!!!

I was able to program the remotes no prob...

Still haven't made it to a dealer to have the key programed, but at somepoint I'll brake down and force Amanda to do it... :D
