Some additional information about the location: This photo was taken at a wayside highlighting "Goodale's Cutoff." An alternate route of the Oregon Trail near Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho. I can only imagine what went through the minds of settlers when they happened upon this strange place. I too, was amazed by the landscape here.

Edit: This route also brought me through Arco, Idaho, which claims to be "the first city lit by atomic power"
