What the biggest tire you can run without modification , can't spend much so I was going with 245/50/16 on stock rims

What's the biggest tire I can put on a 97 mk8 stock rims , I think 245/50/16 will that mess with anything?

255 50 16

Ran an 255 on my Oci's before I hub swapped.

For future reference the stock wheel size is:

-16"X7" Diameter
-Positive 39 mm offset
-63.4 mm Center bore
-108x5 Bolt pattern
-225/60 ZR16 tires

So I picked the car up today and checked how much space I have up front with the 225/60/16 tires on,there's not much room left for size wise, so that 245/50/16 will fir on stock rims no mods is what you guys are saying?

245s definitely should work. 255s have been known to work but depending on the actual tire manufacturer, you may rub in the rear depending on your suspension height.
