Trans fluid temps

Does anyone know what temp mercon V freezes or becomes harder to move from place to place?

I noticed that under 20 outside my car has slow 2-3 shifts and same with OD engagement

With "LOD" Since 1997
-20 Deg F, yea you may not want to use Mercon V and so with a fully synthetic like an amsoil or something that will do better in those temps. Does the shifting at least improve when it warms up?

I remember back in Saskatchewan when it got to be -40, you needed to let the whole car warm up before you could move it. A block heater definitely helps (You need it to even start the engine in Sask. and every employer had a plugin for employee parking.) Warming up is a good plan even at -10. We didn't run special tranny fluids, just gave it 5 - 10 minutes to start circulating properly before driving away. There is no AT fluid that does not become excessively viscous in the real cold (that's not +20). Keep the Mercon! At +20, I wouldn't worry. I'd actually worry more about the gear oil in the differential, but again that's only at -20 or lower. I've seen the gear oil in a manual tranny become solid at -40. But you just need to let it warm up in neutral before moving it. Once the gears start moving in it, it corrects itself. And yes even at +20, it's bound to be a bit more viscous than when it's 100 outside (AZ all the time). Don't worry; Be happy that it runs! Just warm it up properly before moving it if it's really cold, not just wimpy cold.

Does the brand of mercon matter? I have a mix of supertech and stp in there. It seems it needs to be at operating temp for at least 5min before its normal otherwise it kinda locks me out of the gear of shifts as if it was not jmodded.

What about the pressure being higher on the tune? Any effect from that?

Brand does not matter since a given transmission fluid must conform to a specific set of specifications including viscosity and temperature dependence as well as basic additives. Some manufacturer's enhance the system, but it must meet basic specs. Tranny fluid does not work well outside of it's intended operating range which is why proper warmup is necessary. Jmod will definitely make it more sensitive to operating viscosity. Warm it up for a bit and be thankful that it's not today's high will be -30.

Yikes. So maybe not the fluid, so much as a poorly timed trans failure?

I assume "complete failure" means "even when it is warmed up.." If so, I suppose drop the pan and see what's going on in there..

Well, if you plan to swap your 'Vic over to a manual, you've suddenly found yourself a spare tranny for the Mark.. :D

The vic also has a bad tranny lol. All my spare trannies that i have around are 04+ so they wouldnt fit anyway :/

Maybe keep vic auto ane manual the mark
