Various Curiosities

Hi folks, I know I have a few different questions posted in a few different places but I am trying to make sure I get them posted in the proper places. I am hoping that eventually I will know enough about this car to be able to help others, but for now I hope you all don't mind all the questions from me, I do however really appreciate all the help I have been getting.

So my new questions for today:

1. The mirror on my 93 Mark VIII has what looks like a Black liquid about a quarter inch or less along the bottom of it. I say liquid because if I tilt the mirror to one side it seems to flow that direction after a little while. I am assuming that this means that the auto tint has something wrong with it. The mirror was out of the car when I got it and I just got it installed back in the car so I haven't drove it at night yet. Has anyone else seen this in theirs? If so, and I need to replace the mirror are there other cars and years that use the same mirror that I can find to replace it with?

2. All my other vehicles I have been able to find an owners manual to view online and sometimes a shop manual even. I plan to buy both for this car as soon as I can afford to but I was curious if anyone knew of a place I could view one online in the meantime. I like having paper copies better for when I'm outside working on things, but a digital version would be helpful for now if I could find one. I seem to be able to find them for the 98 but not so lucky finding them for the 93 online.

3. My headlights seem to be low also. They look to me to be at a level on high beam that would be about what I would expect on low beam and the low beam seem to point close to the ground in front of me. If I adjust the height, is there a factory setting that I can set it back to if I was to do this during the day time, or is this something that I am only going to be able to do at night time and basically guess where they should be leveled out at?

Thank you for any help...

1. Sounds like the tint.
2.
3. There should be adjusters on the back of the housing, if its a gen 1 i believe those had headlight coverage issues

Sounds like you have the auto dimming mirror and it has gone bad

Check eBay for CD or Books, you can pay for all data online and use LOD for help

search on here, someone over the year may have posted the procedure to adjust the gen one head lights. Just an FYI, the gen one headlights are notorious for poor light output even when new sans the LSC HIDs.

To check if headlights are in the ballpark of being correct, on level ground point car toward a wall about five or six feet away. Main point of high beam should be level with center of headlight lens. Both should be same height above ground. Distance between headlight horizontally should be equal and straight ahead. Low beams will be deflected downward so as to not blind oncoming traffic. Make your adjustment via high beam if needed.

There should be bubble levels on the top of the headlamp housing to assist in aiming. Don't try to aim for level though. Make sure the car is sitting on a level surface and the suspension raised to proper trim. Use the adjusters and adjust the headlamps up one notch at a time according to the bubble level. Test drive and repeat if necessary. Lisle has a nifty headlamp adjusting ratchet which helps immensely.

#1, some guys pry the mirror apart, and let the rest of the juice out. Could buy mirror. Could get stick on mirror, under $20 on line.
#2, Get some OEM manuals, not auto store stuff.
#3, Your headlights most likely are yellowish, and all the inside chrome is gone, hence, bad light output. Adjusting them wont help if their not letting the light out.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I haven't been able to get on here since my last post because of some computer issues but I think I am back on for a while again at least until something else goes wrong (fingers crossed)...

I have decided to go online and found a couple manuals that are Actual service manuals and owners manuals and ordering them rather than the ones that they have at the parts store. I was looking at one of them the other day and found that it didn't really have much information that I was looking for so hopefully the ones that are coming will be better.

The mirror is working well enough for a mirror at the moment just no auto tint happening. I willo be keeping my eyes open for one at a junk yard that has it in better shape than mine so that I can try to keep that part originalish if possible. I'm not sure if there are other year/model ford/lincolns that used the same mirror or not yet. I haven't been able to find that information.

The headlights I found the bubble levels, however haven't tried adjusting them yet, had planned on working on that today but health issues caused me to put that off until tomorrow.

Thank you again for all the replies and help.

there are lots of headlight restoration kits out there
anyone have a recommendation.
I tried 2 so far.
The one from Turtle Wax worked better but it just won't get all the yellow off.

Some of the yellow/brown is on the inside of the lense. I've had some that I couldn't get it all off. The heat the lights create will cook the chrome, and the top of the housing will be burnt. Look in the light using a flashlight. If the chrome (inside) is pretty much gone, you will never get good light output. An HID kit will help, but it's just a band aid.

Most of us gen one guys get the 96 LSC headlights, because they have clear lenses and aren't usually burned because they run cooler. Then we get adapters from another member on here and buy aftermarket HID kits.

I'm guessing in your case the low beams got burnt out and someone re-aimed them to use the high beams as lows. The only real fix is to separate the lens from the housing. Then sand and buff them and using a product called trim brite on the reflectors.

^Tony^ has done allot and knows his stuff, but I just opted for LSC's on my 95.

Awesome, I just watched a video on how to use the Sylvania stuff... I think I am going to give that a try along with some new bulbs. Thank you for the advice...

When you say adapter, what are the adapters for? Mine is the 93 but I would assume that since yours is a 95 that it would also work on mine. I might also consider cleaning the reflectors as well... couldn't hurt I wouldn't imagine... Also, I really like the looks of these hoods on these cars. Thanks for adding the pic as well.

The adapters with HID kits help but you should address the housing and lenses first, then buy the kit.

Maybe buy an extra set of base housings to practice/play with.

The adapters he's talking about allow the use of aftermarket HID bulbs in the factory HID housings, rather than use the expensive OEM bulbs. If you end up with a set of HID housings, I highly recommend considering these adapters and going with a set of inexpensive aftermarket bulbs/ballasts.
