Video to the Computer

Guys I have just been given a video camera. It is a super vhs camera, they type with the micro vhs tape. Is there a way to transfer the video from the tape to the computer. It has s-video and stereo rca's. Has anyone ever done this?

Yes, you need a video capture device, there are plenty on the market as well as editing software. Pinnacle is popular for home armature use.

Another way to go is to upgrade your video card to one that supports video in. This is a good way to go if you were thinking of upgrading anyway. There are Several of these cards on the market and they come with video editing s/w as well. Several dependancies though.

Not that Steve's suggestion is bad. It's definitely not. It's just an alternative.

My brother and I managed to convert some ancient 8mm film when we were kids back in the 60's. We now have then on CD's for future enjoyment, as the original films have become very brittle. Basically we had to reshoot the original film with the new camera then import it into the computer through the video card and s/w editing tool.

We had lot's of fun going down memory lane doing this project together.

Hey Neilster,
How fast is your computer? I'm using Pent III at 300mghz, I think. I wonder if that's too ancient to to install the video card you mention.

Mine is a PIII INTEL 500 MHz with 256 Mg Ram running Win98. It's pretty tough now finding any peripherals supported by these things. The new machines have faster internal workings. An internal video card is probably not the way to go in your case. The money would probably be better spent on a newer system.

The video card solution is was referring to was actually installed on my brother's system. It's a much faster CPU than mine, but don't know the spec's off hand. I did download the CD authoring s/w he was using on mine. But honestly, it struggled and crashed too frequently for serious use.
