2005 Mark VIII meets ???

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

Rene any idea of yours would be a good idea... ;)

Perhaps the first question or poll, should ask whether people are interested in a cross country style drive (I'd probably go as far a Chicago) or to have large regional meets like we used to plan over the warm months years ago.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

If I understand the "Power Tour", it is like a more akin to a relay race rather than an endurance run. Craig and a group may start from the west coast with people joining along the way. You go along as far as you wish. Maybe a day trip, maybe a week! Maybe a couple hundred miles, maybe a thousand miles or more. Your choice. You need enough participants so you never 'run out'. Usually several marquee destinations are along the way for the gang to stop and participate - car shows, races, tourist stops, etc... as well as a final event at the end point.

BTW, I filled in the calendar with the "Fun Ford Weekend" dates. Alexander put in the Carlisle dates. If someone would tell me the WFC details and the MN12 nationals or any other major event of your liking, we can begin to assemble likely backdrops for possible meets. :)

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

I definitely would like to see us represented at WFC this year in St. Louis. It's not much of a show, but there's racing too, which is a lot of fun, and the trip itself (hotel, etc.) is cheaper than Carlisle.

I'm semi-interested in a power tour. I think the Lincoln club (classic Lincolns - can't think of the name offhand) does something like that every year, but on a smaller scale.

I'd like to see the annual Chicago meet become what it was the year before last (we did have one last year, but it was rather small).

One other event I'm highly interested in attending is the US Grand Prix in Indy (June 16-18 I believe).

For me, committment to any event is going to depend on how work goes for me this year and what kind of time off/funds I'll need.

Oh, I've always wanted to go to the super heaveyweight shootout too.

EDIT: And Detroit. I want to go back to Detroit. And Texas. I want to go there again. And New Orleans. I bet we could really tear up the town there.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

I wouldn't mind doing Chicago again. And i would defninitely like to see the US Grand Prix.

A power tour type thing would probably work best if we hooked up with another club, or even the hot rod power tour. I bet if we have a dozen lincolns on the actual hot rod power tour, that one of the owners gets on TV to talk about how it's all about the people and how you don't really need a superfast car.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

Doesn't Hotrod do a west coast power tour and then an east coast tour? Maybe we could change it up somewhat as well.

Maybe have a group coming in from the west coast and group coming from the east coast. Have them meet up somewhere in the middle of the country. People joining along the way and going as far as they can. This way you could have a group going to and coming back from the final meeting place. Maybe talk to a local dealership or two in the final meeting place or a long the way that we can stop at and see about having a mini meet on their lot to show off the lincolns.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

With the power tour thing, we need to step back and take a look at how many miles that really is. Even "meeting up in the middle" is a 2500+ mile round trip if you live in a coastal state.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

Thats why we make so you go as far as you can or want. maybe a few make it from one or both coasts. Some may make it 100 miles, others 2000 miles. Works the same way with the hotrod tour not all that start go the whole way not all start in the starting area, but come and go as it moves to a final meet at a set place. Could even have a simple award made up for those that go the longest and for other things like that.

For example maybe I start in NY meeting up with some from the New England area, As we move west we lose a few, but pick up some new as we move into other states. People just south might come up north some as we go south some. I might go as far as say Indy where I will have meet up with others. maybe I will the only one coming back, maybe a few of us have set that as our max driving area and drive back. Breaking apart as we get closer to home. In the meantime other are still going to the end or stoping at different stops.

I think that would be the basics of it for the most part.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

I like the log/journal/scrap book idea that does the traveling, and keep the meets closer to a regional event/home - a tank of gas limit to a gathering point. Between the events, members move the journal to the next destination recording the journey on the way with pictures, mementos, ect. I think that would be awesome.

Another idea would be a scavenger hunt with the log, and post clues on the LOD web page as to how to find it - like GPS position, and clues how to move it to the next city.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

I'd hopefully be in on a Chicago meet. Have wanted to do that since 2 years ago.

If we do STL again let me know. I'll work on the hotel thing and hopefully do even better than last year on the rates.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

If the timing is right I am up for a drive to St. Louis. Any reason to get to a Steak-n-Shake is good for me. None in NY, I miss them

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

well, this is really taking off well. However, I havent seen ONE west coaster pipe up except for Max. Max and I have taken many long drives together, and he is great company.

here is what I would LOVE to see.

I start on __________(said date), and meet up with Max. We take a photo(disposable camera, or even better, decent digi-cam sponsored by, and provided by LOD funds), and start a log book. We(and anyone else local) begin out trip east. probably heading south first, hopefully gather some so-cal mark folks. Log in their names, miles, take pics, etc.

Then, eastward HO!

more pics with more members joining the LOD-CONGA.

Then, the "torch" would be handed to perhaps a vegas/Arizona member, and us west coasters may need to turn around, and head for home, knowing our legacy has been handed over to the next "messengers of the LOD word".

They continue east, through Texas, and through the southern states OR head north/central USA to gather more members, snapping digital pics, loggin in events/meals/entertainment highlights, hotel brew-ha-ha's,(roadtrip hotel meets are always entertaining/loud/obnoxious/restful).

This could then become not only a club event, but a team event.

when all is said and done, the pics/highlite's/log entries could be posted here as the LARGEST event held in LOD history.

I would have a blast looking at the pics, to see what we started, and how it grew larger and larger at each city along the way.

Since most of the FFW/SSHS/All-Ford events seem to happen in the midwest, or eastern states, us west-coasters would miss out on that fun stuff, so it would be great to see pics/details later when its over.

This could take a week or two to come to fruition from beginning to end. But if I knew when to start... I could plan it from there.

I would be greatly disappointed to not meet all of you, but knowing I will be sending my photo messages/logged hours/miles to you via another member, it would feel like a huge quest.

keep the feedback coming gang. This sounds awesome. for those uninterested in the "club" method, do it for the simple fun of a roadtrip across this great country. Do it to help us all send each other greetings/care-packages, etc.
Hell, if someone in NY needs a part I have here, that can become part of the "package" that gets transported. Jeremi, need another pair of those "special" intake nuts? it would be cool to have them delivered in a box of good tidings all the way from California BY HAND!!!

Ok...my head hurts again.

I wont be able to commit to any of the Ford meets since I am sure Vegas will be my turning around spot. But knowing something I helped start, will get "handed over" and carried further east on my behalf, will feel like a great accomplishment.

BTW, we need to name this thing....this event....this nation-wide gathering, even if it is only two-three marks at a time.

The Great Mark VIII TOUR
Travel VIII-gent 2005
God Bless The US-VIII's
United St-8's Relay
The Great Mark VIII Drive Across America
...corny, but I am thinking as I go.

if you do-gooders REALLY want to add a twist, try to pick up a few sponsors to provide funding. All proceeds will get donated to_________(a whole other discussion we would have)

This could be strictly non-profit, but also could provide some long-distance travellers with some "emergency" money. For example, let's say I got 4 shops to donate $250 each(thats a grand folks), and somewhere along the way, one of us had a mechanical breakdown that cost $250 to repair, and we ended up with $750 remaining, we would have $750 to donate, from the LOD on behalf of ____________(shop names).

Think about these things folks...before long, it will be March. But I do have one request. I would like to do this before Summer, as haulin my butt across the desert in June doesnt sound like a good idea, financially.

And, furthermore, it doesnt necessarily have to be a "non-stop" relay. I could leave in April, drive for a day and a half, meet other members at (location B), hand over the "goods", have a nice meet/meal/rest/social gathering, and then depart. That group of people wouldnt have to leave on their part of the journey until a day or two, maybe even a week later...as long as it is planned so that each leg ends where it is supposed to, when it is supposed to be there.

I still like the idea of some "honorable mention" for the folks who log the most miles. perhaps a LOD sponsored plaque, signifying their accomplishment, dedication, and over-all stupidity! :+
We could even have small awards for the "1000 mile-ers", or something along those lines. That would make a great conversation piece, and earn plenty of bragging rights amoung mark VIII peers.

anyway...enough for now. Just sharing ideas for you folks to ponder.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

I would like to make the trip coast to coast, but not this year probaly. Already have a trip to Maui planned :+ , after buying some of Joe's engine parts(and others), I'm in penny pinching mode as is. Would still make a southeastern meet, at least, though.

I would like to see a way for someone to drive a quarter, third, or half way, then tag along as a passenger the rest of the way, helping with gas money along the way. Then you can fly back to your car and return home via a new route/new meet. Or even have a "return the passenger" tour back across the country via a different route/new meets to their car.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

Sign me up! To add to the excitement, we could create a forum on the LOD site where the from & to members can plan a meeting place for each leg of the journey as they see fit, with the goal being that the journal be at the next regional meet for all to see.

While in the posession (layover city until it resumes the journey) of the member, they must record the daily activity of the log such as "the log book went to dinner at...", or "it sat in the trunk of the Mark today", always logging the mileage.

That way, all involved in the log book's travels have their own chapter, and story to tell. The log needs to then hitch a ride, and travel back to the starting point in order to do it all over again. What a great idea!

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

We could call the whole thing
"The LOD Log Run"

The "log" could be the whole point of this deal. I mean, other than the great drive, the people, the events, etc. The "log" could become like a torch, carried on from "chapter to chapter" ...all events documented along the way...our own "message in a bottle" if you will.

this is getting interesting. But if it gets TOO complicated, say the word, and I'll stop throwing concepts out there...and get back to basics.

but if there is a "goal" in mind...something that hinges on the entire club's participation, it might generate comraderie, and (dare I say it) make this place feel like a club again.

If timing is right...I would love to plan to go farther than Vegas. perhaps Phoenix/Tucson, who knows. But ever since my racing days, with the long road trips, towing a race car on the highways and byways, I always wanted to do the SF to Vegas drive...in my Mark.

The question is...which one do I take? The 97 has a full extended Ford warranty...but the 94 is the "ultimate road machine"...and is used to mile after mile of love, abuse, and down right driving pleasure. This decsison alone will weigh on my mind for weeks.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

Well, what about having a meet in Vegas? Looks like the west coast people could drive, and there are always cheap flights for the rest of us who can't drive that far, and usually cheap hotels too.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

I'd be up for a vegas meet. My car wouldn't make the trip, though.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

Man Vegas sounds good, but I have been there 3 times in the past year and will be going there again sometime in Sept. or Oct. for a meeting. Wife would kill me if I went there an additional time.

I love the thought of this coast to coast thing anyway we do it. Like I said I more than likely could do a run from NY to St. Louis meeting others along the way for whatever amount of miles they can put in. I usually do it non-stop in 17 hours, but if others are willing to go for some of it I can adjust my travel time.

RE: 2005 Mark VIII meets ???

I didnt mean to...but a Vegas thing would be real cool. Early October is a fantastic time for that drive.

We went to the Div. 7 finals NHRA/SUMMIT ET finals there a few years ago. The race was in the first week of Oct.

The drive was beautiful, 70 degree days, not too tough on the cars...daylight savings still in effect, etc.

This could be "one" of the meets we do. Whether it is connected to the cross-country deal shpeel, is another topic.

However...as cool as a "meet" would be with folks who might fly in, without the cars(for me), it just isnt the same. But, thats just my opinion. I mean, there's nothing like seeing 20 people, and 20 mark VIII's all drawn together with a common interest. If you leave the cars at home...then you have 20 strangers...

If JP was standing next to his nicely refined Blue gen 1, with under-hood detailing, and an odor of recently melted rubber coming from the rear tires...I'd know it was him. But if I saw a guy standing next to a coffee dispenser at a buffet in Vegas with a hat on that said "Drillers Go Deep"....it just aint the same! :+ :+ :+

But, that said...I'd drive to vegas to meet you folks...as long as you come out to the lot to see my car(cuz we all know how rare a black gen 1 is ! hahahaha)
