Where can I buy it and if from a parts store, whats the official name of the part? Thanks.

Absolutly! A trac-lock is a must with the 3:73 or higher. You will not be dissapointed. The correct part name is "Ring&Pinion". You can buy them from many places. It seems most people buy the Ford Racing gears.

Consider 4:10's but you will have to get a tune.

will the ring and pinion from any 8.8 fit?

yes
solid axles and IRS use the same gear sets.

there are a few differences in carriers between the solid axle and irs, but for the most part, those interchange as well.
i have 4:10s and a trac lok pulled from a solid axle in my 93 mark viii.

Me? lol

put in a trac lok too while its apart. no sense in spinning all that power away into smoke.
is that one DLF posted a trac-loc? I assume so since it says ring & pinion

I have an sct chip and from what I've read I don't want to just drive locally or hear a loud drone when I drive, so 3:73 will suit me just fine

good luck. its an adventure.

no. those two pieces are the ring gear (circular one) and the pinion gear (shaft one).
that's gears only.
the center carrier is the trac loc unit.

4.10s don't bother me on the highway. no droning.

Chris (and Mike). Not ANY 8.8 will fit because they use different spline counts on the axle. 28 or 31.

Mike...you're gonna need to did someone to build the differential and also someone to remove and re-install it. You don't want to attempt this without a garage or a place to park it for a week torn apart.

any 8.8 gears will fit. You want to get the 28spline traction lock carrier from either a solid axle (ie mustang) or IRS. If you are not on a tight budget it would be best to pay the 250-300 for a new 28 spline IRS carrier. If you are on a tight budget you can go used or buy a non IRS carrier. I bought a used solid axle carrier for $25 and rebuilt it for $60 or so.

Just google Ford 28 spline IRS traction lock. can buy them from many online stores. Would not suprise me if a few people in the club have one for sale. Buy new gears if you are going to pay someone to install them. Try Ford racing parts, Summit, etc.

Try seeing what Max at Chapman Ford (Formerly 5 star)sells both for. He swings us discounts all the time.

If you have speed shop or installer already picked out see what their price is to get the parts.

Let me know if you need a full brand new FRPP kit (gears of your choice, IRS specific t-lok, install kit, axle seals) for around $400.

Oops!

You don't even know what parts you need, how do you think you're going to do the install?

A number of specialized tools are required as well as the knowledge and experience that you don't have. :p

but can get if you have the planning, time, patience, and cash.
i did mine myself.
spent a bit over $600. which was more than the price quoted to me by the local shop. but i didn't care. i like doing it myself.
