Starting the atkins diet tomorrow morning. Im not real excited about it, but one of my friends is a nutritionist and she says its great for you and I wont loose any muscle. Im going to miss milk, pizza, beer and chineese food. Whatever, I could probably use to loose a little weight...

Official starting stats (for the record): 266 lbs, 38" waist, 52" chest, 18" neck.

I'm sceptical at best, but I'll let you know how it goes. This no carb thing is gonna suck...

RE: Atkins Diet

I tried the Atkins Diet....... Twice.

Worked ok the first time......... I lost about 20# in about 6 weeks. I had to drop off it and start again.......... (im in the restuarant biz and HAd to consume carbs as part of my job..) The second time I went on the Atkins diet, I ended up in the ER with high blood pressure and numbness in my arms..... Long story short, I was told to eat normally, and all symptoms went away. This may not happen to you, but be aware this diet sometimes causes strange things to happen.....

One other downside....... it seems there is very very little which is ok to eat nless you actually cook. Cant grab a cookie or a quick sandwich.

RE: Atkins Diet

My pal went on it, so I tried it to help raise his morale. I peeled of 14 pounds in like 10 days. The "induction" phase. Heads up for the headaches you will get as your body is going through carb withdrawal. Be sure to buy the Ketostix, as it really helps you to determine if your bod is in ketosis...

RE: Atkins Diet

Or you could be a real man and watch what you eat and hit the club (gym) everyday...

RE: Atkins Diet

I had a friend with high blood pressure (at the age of about 25) and he was given a choice. Either a traditional no-cholesterol diet, or no carbs. he chose no carbs. He was on it for a good 6 to 9 months. His cholesterol and blood pressure went down, and he dropped a lot of weight. He's about 6'3" or 6'4", and he weighed about 323-350 to start. He's still down at about 250-275, and he's been off the diet for a good 6 months now. Worked for him. My other friend that tried it was only on it a few months. He started at about 350, and he's still down at about 325, after being off it a few months.

Myself, i figured i should just try to exercise. i figure 10 situps and 10 pushups a day is a good start. By the second day my stomach was too sore to do the situps.

RE: Atkins Diet

I've been on it for 3 years. I lost about 45lbs. I think it's easy. Once you get into the routine of what you can and can't eat it's simple.

I set one meal aside each week and ate anything I wanted.

how bout you be a real man, set up to the plate and ill kick your ass? Or you could think about things before you start throwing sh!t like that around.

I spend 1-2 hours a day, 6 days a week in the gym, run 2 miles a day and actively play rugby. I can bench 315 lbs and squat 455 lbs. Since last august I have lost about 40 lbs, through eating 'better' and excercising regularly. My metabloism is just so slow that I could eat nothing and gain weight. I am still suffering from 'spare tire syndrome' and my weight loss has plateaued. Im trying something different now with a hope of reaching my target weight of 245 lbs.

if you must know....

RE: Atkins Diet

Kev,

Don't let JD ruffle your feathers. That's just JD. I'm sure whatever diet you ultimately choose, you'll be successful at it. Like I said..heads up for the headaches though!!

RE: Atkins Diet

I started the diet april 1st this year and have drop 45 lbs and still going.. I do take Atkins vitamins twice a day and have had no side effects. I am not 100% carb free but it seams to be working for me.

Just be sure to check with your Doctor prior to starting it...

RE: Atkins Diet

I tried it 3 years ago. Cut out all sugar and starch. it was pretty dang hard to do! I stayed on it for about 6 weeks. The weight came back within 6 weeks of stopping, becasue I didn't change my habits over the long term.

I hit it hard for 3 weeks, then plateaued. then I allowed myself one day of carbls, I had some rice with dinner and a soda at lunch. The next day I was back on it and within another week I had lost more.

I suppose if I had at that point taken up exercise and a resonable normal diet (less than 200 ozs of Pepsi per day etc) I might have stayed at that lower weight.

But I lost a lot of weight really fast, without doing any exercise or anything. I never got any headaches that I remember.

There's plenty of Chinese food you can eat, just not rice or noodles. It was just about all I ate (homemade). Veggies, meat, seasoning (I think soy sauce is a carb tho, but salt is not). OK so maybe it wasn't "Chinese food" but it was stir-fried...

I also would go to Wendy's, get a triple burger, and throw away the bun.

RE: Atkins Diet

your body needs carbs. if u dont give it what it needs it gets it elsewhere, mainly from muscle.

u can lose tons of weight on atkins but for the most part its muscle mass that is lost. your brain needs carbohydrates and it will get what it needs whether or not u feed it to yourself.

RE: Atkins Diet

well, I guess, but I was happy to lose that 10" circumference of "belly muscle" around my waist ...

RE: Atkins Diet

I don't need atkins diet. I am fat. I have come to terms with that fact of life. I am not REAL fat, mind you, just a bit over weight, (like 40 pounds) or so. I need tilt steering wheels, and a larger size belt, but I am not fat. OTHER people are fat.....I am slightly plump. :) I do diet, sometimes. But for 56, my sugar is perfect, my blood pressure is very good, my cholestrol is good (with pills) :) and I have no diabetes or liver ailments. So I skip deserts, gave up Ice cream and take it easy on fatty foods. When I go Burger King or McDonalds, I get a burger without the mayo or special sauce and no cheese, just burger, lettice, onions & tomato. NO FRIES and a coffee.

Been losing weight slowly over 3 months. Total, so far is 15 pounds, or like 5 a month. Goal is to get back down to 200.

RE: Atkins Diet

Anyone hear heard of the South Beach Diet? Similar to atkins but a lot healthier.

No but I like my South Park diet - lots of Cheezy Poofs and Punch and Pie. :)

try ridding yourself of fast foods altogether and watch the weight jump off your body.
