Cooling tips and tricks...

It's going to be a long, hot summer. We know how the heat makes ETs climb and climb. What used to run mid 14s now struggles to make upper 14s. So what are some tips and tricks to minimize the heat buildup at the track, run after run, without resorting to an hour break or more between runs? ::roll::

How 'bout tried and true heat control products? What have you tried and what was your experience? I'm open to all suggestions.

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

Turning on the heater gives you that small additional "radiator" to help. Also, I have a buddy who used to run his Mark VIII in those Nevada open road speed races in the 120 mph class for 90 plus miles. He used those "water wetter" type products with good success.

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

CO2 buy some from a paint ball shop, spary the maf and intake runners before the pass

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

Suck in a lot of air and blow out onto the engine.

Repeat if necessary.

Driller, you can do a couple of things.

#1- big bag of ice.

#2- electric water pump.

#3- hook up another relay to your fan along with a switch so you can circulate the water and cool the radiator while you are sitting there.

#4-nothing cools like a big bottle of N2O. A 75-125 shot does really well.

run methaonal ::grrr::

ive used water weter in my race quads trick is to go to strait water with not anitfreeze

get a big ass fan liek the big blues ones they use to dry paint in houses with cant think who makes them off of the top of my head and aim it at your radiator

build a dry ice box for your intake

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

Wow, thanks for the responses! :)

I thought about ice(Duh!), running the heater, water wetter and a over-ride relay on the cooling fan. I think it would be beneficial to run the cooling fan at max while in the staging lanes rather than under control of the PCM, especially at tracks where the staging lane times are short.

The CO2, EGR delete, PCV delete, electric pump and dry ice are all intriquing ideas.

DEI has a CO2 cooling system for intake air, fuel and even intercoolers. That sounds interesting, but kind of pricey. For the cost, you could set up N2O and just spray it.

What would be the downsides of the EGR delete and PCV delete? I can see each being somewhat effective at reducing temperatures.

Joe, I can't believe I didn't think of the electric water pump to go along with the fan over-ride! Of course, that's not cheap either.

I've since thought about adding a fan to the tranny cooler I have. Also thought about adding an engine oil cooler possibly with a fan. What do you think? Going fan crazy? LOL! :7

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

If you're referring to the tube & fin cooler behind the lower part of the bumper, that is the power steering cooler. Yes, I believe we do have an oil cooler per se, it is the integrated with the oil filter adaptor housing.

I was thinking along the lines of a oil filter adaptor at the oil filter location, running lines from it to a remote filter and then a traditional fin type cooler or stacked plate cooler. I believe a thermostatic valve would be required as well to bypass the cooler. After all, the engine oil is an engine coolant medium.

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

I hate the EGR. The PVC you need, unless you want to spend some big cash on an evacauator pump. I think I will try turn my powersteering pump into an evacuation system on the red car BTW. Iknow it is good at producing pressure, but am not sure if it can pull any type of vacuum. I think you will not gain anything a oil cooler except weight. A stock mark VIII should not need an oil cooler. THe oil temp should be running 30-40 degrees cooler than the engine coolant. The only reason I will run an oil cooler is to get rid of some of the added temp from the turbocharger heating the oil.

I think you would be happy with an electric water pump. I was suprised with mine. The best results will be with the water pump and fan mod. If nothing else get a way to turn on the fan, run it for a bit, then start the engine for a quick second, to circulate the coolant, then repeat.

I'll sleep on the EGR delete. If I elect to go there, I assume plate it off and plug the lines?

I found this:

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/499.shtml

I'm assuming something similar can be done easily on the Mark. I'll have to crack open the EVTM. Much gooder than the relay method I was going to persue. I'm sure it will help bigtime at the staging lanes. You generally have to start the car and pull up every few minutes it seems anyway. I think I'll keep my PCV.

I might get rid of that blasted PVC though. }(

That mod looks real easy. Does the Mark & Mustang have the same CCRM?
[/div]

Well, I would need to see the EVTM for the circuit on the Mustang to compare. I cannot see a similar way on the Mark VIII by simply grounding one lead. I will look into it further. It may be possible to ground the ECT(Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor or simulate an ACP(Air Conditioner Pressure) sensor going high to cause the cooling fan to switch to high speed.

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

The EVTM will show you where to add power. I think the fan is controled much like the compressor, and is activated on a 12+ side of hte relay. If you found the fan relay it would simple to figure out what was the trigger and then go from there.

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

i was trying to find a picture but cant be we honestly built a dry ice box for one of the cars i crewed for it had hilborns on it the box was about 5 inches tall and we would throw dry ice in it before runs but we also werent running a radior jsut sealed off the head burn methanol and towed to staging and back to the pits it took everything we had to cool that car

RE: Cooling tips and tricks...

The cooling fan is controlled with a solid state relay aka the VCRM(Variable Control Relay Module). It varies voltage from 50%(6V) to 100%(12V) depending on AC operation and PCM instruction via the VCRM. According to the troubleshooting charts, the Mark VIII fan motor is considered to be a single speed fan versus a two speed, hi/lo fan for troubleshooting purposes. This suggests to me the Mustang mod must be triggering the two speed HI operation of the cooling fan?

It appears grounding the ECT sensor would not be the way to go since it would tell the PCM the engine is hot and it may pull back power. However the ACP sensor interfaces only with the VCRM and will signal the fan to go to high speed with high AC pressures. I need to find out more on this. It may turn out to be simpler to interface a DPDT relay to switch control from manual over-ride to automatic.
