Ok guys for the last few weeks I really have been thinkin of gettin rid of the Mark for soemthin else, but I just can't. When the car was drivin right I loved it, had some plans to do somethings to it and all.
Well I have a belt squeal, as some know I posted bout it. Well I ordered a tensioner should be here soon. Now I think the squeal is the alternator. I replaced it last year when it went bad. Also have an annoying sound kind like a tick. Well here are my vids, where should I begin to even pin point teh problems and fix this thing?

Oooooouuuuu I hate to say it, but thats no exhaust manifold leak. I don't recommend driving it any more until you figure out exactly what that is. It sounds like a valve train noise, possibly a broken valve spring or bad lifter.

I recommend you either, head to the parts store and purchase an automotive stethascope, or drain the oil and look for any excess metal particles in the oil.

If you go get the stethascope, you can listen around and pin point exactly where the noise is coming from. This will help us/you better understand what is wrong. Either way, it doesn't sound good.

It sounds like a lash adjuster sticking. Pour some marvel mystery oil in the crankcase and hope it frees it up. If not it's probably something else in the valvetrain.

Theres your belt squeek, lol. You just aren't having any luck man....I wish you the best. If you were close I'd help you fix it! I did my waterpump on the road and had it purchased and done in 40 min.

Well I have the exact same noise and have a similiar post out there for it. I tried the marvel mystery oil thing and it didn't help any. I spent a very long time with the stethoscope also and could not pinpoint the noise. Also have had the passenger valve cover off with nothing out of the ordinary. Mine gets better and pretty much goes away when warm. I have been driving mine, but only because I have a spare parts car with a good running engine in it. I'll post if I find something new or the root cause.

Have either of you guys let your cars sit for an extended period of time before these noises came up?

When you burp the system, you just remove the 1/4 plug at the top of coolant crossover tube, fill it up with coolant until the resevoir starts to overflow. Put the plug back on(don't over tighten) and start the car up and turn on the heater. If the car heats up and "burps" properly, you'll feel WARM air coming out of the a/c system. If you have HEAT then your system is burped properly.

I believe my car sat for sometime also before I bought it, at least that's what the previous owner stated. I'm not sure what you mean by burping the cooling system though and what effect that would have on the noise:confused:

Get the air out of the coolin system. Nothin to do with the noise but I need to replace my seized waterpump.

I have the same ticking in mine. I've been driving it for the last 2+ years. Before that it sat at my dad's house for a year cause the tranny went kaput on my way out there and I went overseas on a contract for a year, saving for a new tranny. My dad drove it a little here and there but it mostly sat. He couldn't take it out of town cause the tranny would slip out if you tried to go faster than 40mph.

I tried the Marvel and the Lucas and the Seafoam and nothing gets rid of the ticking.

It's really loud when you start it after sitting a bit, then it quiets down to a slight ticking like yours, sal329.

I also get a chirp from my belt after hitting second at wot.

My car sat 2 months without bein driven then the noise happened.

Yep.....I know what it is.....

Oh no....you too!

Wow...this is turning out to be a VERY common thing.

Ok.....here's a story.

My car had 175K on it with NO issues. While at the Academy I left my car at my old work (auto shop) for my buddies to install a red powdercoated intake and rocker cover set. The car was there for approx. 1 1/2 months. After I got it back, I drove it for about 6 hours with no issues. I stopped for dinner, and when I came out to start it I had an Oil Light and a loud noise in the valve train area. After about 10 seconds it went away. The next morning, same thing, but for longer. So....I thought my oil pump took a dump or something so I figured I'd put a new(used) engine in. I bought an engine from a local Ford wrecker which had 47K miles on it. Put it in, and after about 2 weeks of driving it I got the EXACT SAME THING! WHAT THE F MAN! Sounded just like your video. So heres what I found out.......

Apparently the bleed back valve in the oil pump will get stuck causing the oil pressure to flow too much or not enough. Some times you'll get the oil light and some times you don't. The 4.6 DOHC tech that I had look at it said it was a VERY common problem with these motors, but only when the cars sit for a long time. Also, the way this is fixed, is by "priming" the engine oil system before starting it after its sat a long time.

Soo....after 2 engine swaps in 2 months and $1600 later I learned a hard lesson.....don't let your Mark sit too long or it will get pissed at you.

Unfortionally, I don't have any recommendations except drive it till it dies. :(

So, the ticking noise these guys are experiencing is due to damaged parts in the valve train from top end oil starvation? Thats depressing... Any idea what parts are likely to be worn? Cam lobes? Rockers? Valve guides? Or all of the above?

How can we prime our systems to prevent this? Is it that WOT trick while cranking to cut off fuel, then starting?

Well, i just got in from working on my car - guess what? Mine ticks from the rear of the passenger valve cover too! Never noticed it before until you guys started talking about it - its quite a faint noise - have to really listen for it, but its there - a rythmic tick that is related directly to RPM.

Seems kinda odd that they are all making the noise at the exact same place - maybe the nature of these engines? Possibly a design fault resulting in poor lubrication to the rear of the passenger cylinder head that is especially highlighted when there is low oil pressure due to the oil pump valve?

Anyone else have the same faint tick?

Basically its damage that occurs when you start the car after its sat for a while. The pressure valve in the oil pump will become faulty and then it becomes an issue of oil starvation. But thats just the start, I'm sure it damages each engine differently, but all the damage seems to be to the top of the engine.

You can use the WOT trick to prime the system, or just pull the fuel pump fuse and crank it for a bit. (just like the old days when you're installing a new engine)

I'm not 100% positive we are ALL having the same issue, but basically once you have the noise, its not going to go away. It seems to be a lifter issue, possibly partially collapsed.

Just been doing some reading around the internet - the top end tick seems to be a very common thing on Ford Modular engines. Causes of noise range from sticky lifters, to worn exhaust valve guides, to piston slap. One suggested fix for the noisey lifters (other than replacement) is to try a slightly thinner oil.

Are lifters easy to replace?
