Ethanol powered mark 8!

RE: Ethanol powered mark 8!

On the net energy content of ethanol:

http://www.ethanol-gec.org/corn_eth.htm

http://www.ethanol-gec.org/netenergy/net-energy-yield.htm

Seems to me that there's positive net energy from ethanol. It gives back more than it takes to make it.

Now it's just a matter of dealing with cold-start issues, corrosion issues in fuel systems, fiberglass tank issues in older boats (even 10% ethanol can destroy an older fiberglass fuel tank, requiring tens of thousands of $$ to repair), then we can crank up production and reduce our oil imports.

RE: Ethanol powered mark 8!

We have switched our FSAE car to e85 the fuel system problems are not a huge deal no aluminum parts that arent coated be careful what seals you use

id much rather see us go to propane
Ethanol is expensive when the govt isnt footing most of the bill

RE: Ethanol powered mark 8!

Ethanol will get cheaper over time, though.

Propane is harder to store, you'll have to store it under pressure. E85 is a much better solution for general public.

on the FSAE car, did you increase compression? Do you take a hit on the endurance competition because of decreased fuel mileage, or do you use a bigger tank to compensate?

RE: Ethanol powered mark 8!

i also forgot to add the part about the fertilizers and insecticides needed for the corn. methane is where its at. professor here is working on methane gas and diesel.

RE: Ethanol powered mark 8!

Here in WV, our sate university, WVU, has started a coal gasification{sp?} pilot study under a directive from the Governor.

[/div]we should increase the compression we have the octane to do it but as of now its stock we do have a pretty big timming advance.

The milage is not a huge issue for the endurance race im not sure how big the tank is though (im the body guy)

Methane needs to be stored as a gas, which is a major drawback for a motor fuel. It also has a low energy content. Major engine changes, as well as a completely different fuel storage and delivery system, is needed to run Methane. I wouldn't want to drive a car that runs on Methane.

The fertilizers and insecticides used to grow the corn are included in the energy calculations in the links i posted. Also, if you're not planning on eating the corn, you don't need as much in the way of pesticides.

hmm, that's weird here in MN it was published sunday april 23rd in the st paul, MN pioneer press that it cost $1.10 to make a gallon of ethanol. Oh well, as long as the farmers are the primary beneficiaries of that price difference it's fine by me!

Hmmm...farmers could be the fat cat energy moguls of the future. Interesting thought...

RE: Ethanol powered mark 8!

yeah, just wait until corn fields look like huge parking ramps with sprinklers and heat lamps all over!!! With the way people over-populate in this world it could be coming soon. Man I'm just starting to get annoyed in general when I see a couple together who clearly shouldn't be together. These people have absolutely no regard for the earth they were given an opportunity to live in and figure it's their responsibility to spawn more atrophy into it? Seriously some... most people shouldn't be granted marriage licenses or the doctors should remove their child's sexual organs upon birth to ensure our future is well. Then on top of that the females that come out of respectable families should be made to be asexual so you don't hav eto worry about an ill minded female allowing a poison to leak in and decimate the production of a bright child. It's just ridiculous to see that working class people are paying upwwards to 2 billion dollars a year (in just my county) for people to be in jail. Then if those type of people aren't in jail they're getting welfare somewhere which also comes from working class. The penalty for the first felony should be neutering the individual. For example the guy or girl that hit the mark 8, him or her and his or her brothers and sisters should be neutered or (what it's called then girls can't reproduce).
They made a mistake? How is a mistake ever done out of a clear minded decision to do something which the individual knows is wrong? Sure you could say they were under the influence, well to be under the influence is initially a clear minded judgement made by the person under the influence. There's not too many instances where a person accidently does cocaine, methamphatmine, alcohol, marijuana or any other type of destructive drug. Just think how wonderful this country would be if 40 years in the future you never saw 1 person driving in an SUV, or if you never saw or knew of a "ghetto", if you didn't have to de/justify being in a war with some 3rd world country, if you didn't have to see 500 churches on your way to your grandparents because this became a perfect world (a choice that is valid in all of our consciences), someday when everyone can achieve maximum reward for utilizing their strengths will that be realized.

Not sure how to respond on this one... :)
