Fuel Prices

RE: Fuel Prices

John's right, but you really have to live here to understand.

The calif envorinmentalists actually lobbied for the fed EPA to make the restrictive rules that now govern Cali.... that explains our gas... you know, the one with MTBE in it that cost an extra $.15/gal to make....

Then they figured out MTBE was bad for the enviornoment, so, to take it out will cost another $.15/gal.

So, to undo what cost money and go back costs MORE MONEY. the oil companies are getting rich..

The cali energy crisis was really about the federal government not necessarily controlling, but ignoring the conditions in Cali. the Federal Energy Regulatory Comission could have capped rates, but chose not to....

I agree Bush didn't create the problems, but the members he later appointed to FERC did everything they could to avoid addressing the issue. And it was the big energy companies that Bush is friendly with that took advantage of the situation. Natural gas at $34 one year, and over $1100 for the same quantity less than a year and a half later? I don't care who or what was responsible, it was a SCAM!

RE: Fuel Prices

Scott hit it on the head with the MTBE crap plus the ethanol stuff. There should only be three types of unleaded gas in the country. That would eliminate shortages and drop prices around the country.

Natural gas will never go down until we start extracting more of it from our own resources. This country has made a massive change to natural gas in the last 15 years and that is what is chiefly responsible for the surge in prices, that and the weather, (supposedly).

I'm taking my kid for a walk so I am politely bowing out for now.

I don't live there but I never heard it described quite like you just did. I thought it was CARB that made the restrictive rules and not California lobbying the EPA to do anything.

And tell me. How can you turn this state required regulation into something that you now want us to believe makes the oil companies into something evil, or even to be blaming it on the feds? Put the blame where it belongs and that's with the politicians and environmental lobbyists in your state.

RE: Fuel Prices

Premium {93 octane}can be bought below $1.40 here in GA. Part of that is that we have one of the lowest state motor fuel taxes in the US, and a law that states that ALL motor tax funds collected MUST be used ONLY for ROAD WORK!

Please guys, keep the political stuff under a heading that lets you know it is a politcal discussion, because like Sandy, I don't want to get all PO'ed and spit out some vitriolic comments that will cost me friends.

RE: Fuel Prices

$1.39 for 93 premo here in Charleston SC. Gerogia and SC have the lowest state tax on gas which helps.

RE: Fuel Prices

There's two separate issues we're talking about here. One is gas prices, which I don't really follow. The other is natural gas and electricity prices and the phony California "energy crisis" in 2000-2001, which is what John was referring to. The latter was a direct result of manipulation by companies like Enron. Rather than go into it here (after all this thread is supposed to be about gasoline prices), look it up for yourselves. Do a Google search on "enron death star" and see what comes up.
