Fuel pump replacement

While replacing my stock pump with a 190 lph Walboro I found the rubber hose was split. The car was cranking longer before it started I thought the pump was going. The car has 91,000 on it.
Had to cut the bottom of the carrier bigger to support the new pump and cut the bottom of the old isolator off to fit around the new one. Also should use the new one on the bottom of the pump.

This is exactly why I tell people if their vehicle 8 years or older they need to replace the pump or at least have it checked out. This exact situation will also cause you lean problems at high loads and rpms. Normal driving you usually won't notice it.

So after you have your vehicle reprogrammed with a performance tune the engine load and rpm will be increased over stock requiring more fuel. These vehicles run extremely rich with the factory programming. With a custom performance tune your fuel tables are leaned out to an optimized safe ratio for better performance. With that being said, with a failing fuel pump it can't deliver this additional fuel and you go lean, detonation starts and the knock sensors kick in pulling tons of timing out. Then you end up scratching your head wondering why you lost performance vice gaining it with the chip.

I have to admit I haven't driven it yet. I started it again the next day to make sure it was normal. I have just been a passenger ( Iryna is driving it) :wink2-green It seems to be more responsive , she is getting a heavy foot:laugh: I'll give it a test when the roads get dry.....:lolgrin003:

I'll be doing the same thing in the spring with my 95. It's running very strong but I don't trust the old fuel pump.

Very good idea, when my first fuel pump died it was right at 150,000 miles.
It showed no signs of issues, fuel pressure was fine..the car RAN STRONG because it was leaning out on the top end.

Then it just stopped..dead pump.

i did this as best as I could today, the thick rubber cover does not really fit on the fuel pump with the fuel sock on the bottom, also my fuel sensor guage (yellow wire) broke. i installed it and it ran fine, i went and got gas, ran fine back home. came out ten minutes later and it was stuttering and choking - its not getting the right fuel? some think its the FPR?

Time to go backwards thru the install...
It's gonna be very difficult for someone to diagnose what the issue actually is, when you have so many "issues" with the install.

could be pinched the inlet between the "two fingers"...
Could be a bad connection, did you replace the pigtail with the one provided in the kit?
Could be the supply line going from the pump TO the pump assembly/hanger, did you replace the supply line with the one provided in the kit?

I would drop it back down.. remove one of the two fingers {that is the easiest solution}
I would replace the supply line with the one provided in the kit
I would replace the pigtail with the one provided in the kit.

until you cross those bridges, it is going to be very difficult to tell you what the problem is.
Actually "you'll need to tell us what the problem was and what you did to correct it".

Thaks Serg, this post has encouraged me to buy a new pump. I needed one for some time, but the long starts bothered me. Oddly this morning it did not even start the first time!

I am sure its dying :(

This will help!

OMG, that was total PITA!

I replaced my pump. The "kit" I got from SuperCoupe had a filter on the end that was too large it seems. It caused the pump to sit a half inch too high. I had to cut a half inch off teh pump caddy with the Dremel to raise the pump. It took a few tries to get the pump height right. It still sits in the tank with pressure on the inner bucket. Not only that the o-ring was too small for the tank seal at the pump. I had to use the old one.

If you have a 96, do not buy from SuperCoupe unless you like BIGGER projects! :D

Shawn,
Your welcome You need to check the pressure at the shraeder valve. I was brave and didn't do it. I had a gut feeling that was the problem
It still runs great!!

Shawn,
I too laughed at the tank gasket. I just cleaned the old one and put some lube on it to keep it in place. Like I said or showed I had to make the basket opening bigger so the pump would sit right. I am not the best at explaining things

Abraham I showed I had to cut the bottom of the rubber boot off I did the same on my 96.

Serg. I fully got the picks and the need to cut the isolator and the bottom of the caddy. That helped a lot knowing I would have to do that ahead of time.

I think my problem was SuperCoupe send the wrong filter. Its exactly like in the picks. It actually sits at an angle and has a top to bottom depth of an inch.

Was your filter more like the OEM in appearance? Rectangular and flat?

Now I am worried that I will have to take this all apart again....

I am not best at explaining things on the computer, just trying to help. Thats where the pictures help.
I ordered mine from Jd's performance and yes the filters on both Marks were rectangular and flat. I didn't have an issue with those.:cool:

I was actually just looking at the SCP pump to order today, and Unity's report makes me think twice. Where would everyone recommend getting a pump from?

I got mine from www.50resto.com, ordered the pump for the 96 cobra.
was a little over 100 dollars, like 109 or something like that.

I'm pretty sure that if you called Bill at SCP he would be able to get you the right parts.
I haven't heard of him making "too many mistakes" with parts.

Unity was probably an isolated incident and Bill is probably "on the ball" with what happend.
