RE: Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!
We can argue till our dying days whether going into Iraq was a good idea or not. For me, it's not as simple as yes or no. There were some very legitimate reasons to take out Saddam, but some good reasons for not doing it the way we did. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot that can be done at this point other than to ride it out.
With all due respect to Marine, what I get tired of are some of the arguments the right uses to justify things like the abuse at Abu Ghraib. For example, it's been said that the things that were done to prisoners were nothing more than "humiliation", or likened to "fraternity pranks", as Rush keeps insisting. Some of the photos I've seen go far beyond "pranks". Like the one of the man bleeding on the floor after being savaged by an attack dog. Or the photos of the Marines posing next to BODIES of prisoners who were beaten to death. There are several soldiers who are being tried for murder right now.
You can't blame the media for bringing this to our attention. And the argument that, what was done to the prisoners was nothing compared to what Saddam routinely did, doesn't hold water either. We ALREADY KNEW Saddam was an evil mother******! Same with terrorists kidnapping and beheading people. We EXPECT that from these dirtbags! It's a given!
What we DIDN'T expect was our own troops engaging in similar behavior, even if it wasn't of such an "extreme" nature. Regardless of whether the abuse was government-sanctioned (we'll probably never know), it is a huge black eye for America's supposed reputation as a "force of good" or whatever you want to call it. There are simply no excuses to justify what went on. America is supposed to be ABOVE all this!
If anything, the press has been too lax. They've been cowed by pundits and talk show hosts to the point that objective journalism has gone the way of the passenger pigeon. Anything at all that is in the least bit unflattering of the president, and the Rush Limbaugh's and the Sean Hannity's start screaming "LIBERAL MEDIA!". So in place of real investigative journalism, we're fed more and more stories filled full of quotes from "experts" from both "sides" of the issue, even if one "side" of the story is complete BS. It's all in the interest of being "fair and balanced". That's no way to keep people informed.
