Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!

RE: Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!

We can argue till our dying days whether going into Iraq was a good idea or not. For me, it's not as simple as yes or no. There were some very legitimate reasons to take out Saddam, but some good reasons for not doing it the way we did. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot that can be done at this point other than to ride it out.

With all due respect to Marine, what I get tired of are some of the arguments the right uses to justify things like the abuse at Abu Ghraib. For example, it's been said that the things that were done to prisoners were nothing more than "humiliation", or likened to "fraternity pranks", as Rush keeps insisting. Some of the photos I've seen go far beyond "pranks". Like the one of the man bleeding on the floor after being savaged by an attack dog. Or the photos of the Marines posing next to BODIES of prisoners who were beaten to death. There are several soldiers who are being tried for murder right now.

You can't blame the media for bringing this to our attention. And the argument that, what was done to the prisoners was nothing compared to what Saddam routinely did, doesn't hold water either. We ALREADY KNEW Saddam was an evil mother******! Same with terrorists kidnapping and beheading people. We EXPECT that from these dirtbags! It's a given!

What we DIDN'T expect was our own troops engaging in similar behavior, even if it wasn't of such an "extreme" nature. Regardless of whether the abuse was government-sanctioned (we'll probably never know), it is a huge black eye for America's supposed reputation as a "force of good" or whatever you want to call it. There are simply no excuses to justify what went on. America is supposed to be ABOVE all this!

If anything, the press has been too lax. They've been cowed by pundits and talk show hosts to the point that objective journalism has gone the way of the passenger pigeon. Anything at all that is in the least bit unflattering of the president, and the Rush Limbaugh's and the Sean Hannity's start screaming "LIBERAL MEDIA!". So in place of real investigative journalism, we're fed more and more stories filled full of quotes from "experts" from both "sides" of the issue, even if one "side" of the story is complete BS. It's all in the interest of being "fair and balanced". That's no way to keep people informed.

RE: Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!

Its too bad we have immature punks like that who destroy our image in front of the world, unfortunately they are a part of society, they are what we like to call "10% who F*ck it up for everyone" and they are in all walks of life, not just the military. I didnt mean to come off sounding as if it was unacceptable, but forgiveable. Because it's not. However, my point was that those soldiers get more media attention than the kidnapped/kidnappers. I would love to see those rotten motherf*ckers get theirs. I saw the unedited video of Nick Berg being beheaded, and honestly, I would never want to watch it again.

Oh, and there is no such thing as objective journalism anymore. But I sure love watching Lt.Col Oliver North being on the front lines with Marines, getting a different side of the war. That was a great Marine.

RE: Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!

Sorry folks, but the media is anything but Liberal.

Do you have anything to back up that claim that the media is funded by Democrats, Marine?

You should all come to www.talk-politics.com

This is at least the 3rd time I've mentioned that site, and I've yet to see anyone there. It's important that we discuss these issues.

RE: Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!

Am I the only guy who thinks that Saddam was a "WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION" himself? Even if they don't find what some people consider "WMD", what Saddam was doing to his neighbors, the UN, his people, and the rest of the world was "lying" that he still actually had it. Because he wanted us, his neighbors and the rest of the world to "think" he had the stuff, he ended up getting his butt kicked mainly because we believed him.

I fly into Iraq and Afganistan on a regular basis as a crewmember on C-17 cargo planes. The more we and the C-130's fly in the theater of OPS the fewer convoys have to go over road. However we can't carry it all but I do know I've hauled many armored up HUMV's and dozens of pallets of armoured plating to put on vehicles in theater. All the troops I've talked to are proud of their mission and want to see it to a peaceful conclusion, it's a small minority that the news media choice to become a "voice" for.

As a side note, in 1983 I flew into Grenada and partook in bring those 600 plus American students back to the U.S. The US news media intervied over 500 students before they found one student who was on the backside of the island and told them he didn't see the big deal in the invasion or why we did it. CBS then chose to show one happy student and this guy on their news shows to give a "fair and unbiased" opinion of the invasion. Yeah, 599 to 1, that fair. ::roll::

We're have a aircrew lounge made in the squadron and the picture will hang in there when they get finished. The couple of guys doing the re-modeling have be pretty busy lately flying overseas so the work is going slow. With the combat zone tax-exemption status and the $225 combat pay they received, it's kind of hard to keep them home long enough to do anything ;)

RE: Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!

Speaking as a member of "the right" I must express my deep feelings of anger when I first heard about the Abu Ghraib prison abuses. Those sickos really gave the U.S. and our military a black eye and I hope they're punished to the fullest extent.

IMO the advent of Fox news is simply a result of the long and steady trend of the media as a whole from objectivity, at least in political or governmental issues. Fox news is a conservative network no doubt, just as CNN is a liberal network no doubt. But to say that the media is balanced as a result of that and the Rush Limbaughs of the world isn't adding up the #'s. I won't insult your intelligence by saying that Fox news is not biased, if you don't insult my intelligence by saying that CNN or MSNBC or Dan Rather or Tom Brokaw or Peter Jennings or etc., etc., etc. isn't biased. Fox News attracts conservative journalists because by and large they don't have a place in the other liberal news organizations. Also note that I watch Hardball and Larry King Live along with the O'Reilly Factor. That's my way of achieving "fair and balanced."

For the U.S. to be able to defend ourself in a post 9/11 world, Saddam had to go any way you look at it and for whatever reason you want to use. Letting him continue only emboldened our enemies to action. Civil war may be inevitable in Iraq but at least they now have that option. I agree with the president when he said that the world is a better place without Saddam Hussein in power, and so does most of the country.

1) Yes, a lounge complete with a bar.
2) "MR..." whats?
3)Yes
4)The building was pre-wired for cable ;)

Thank goodness there are people who want to serve in the Army and Marines, because if they saw how the Air Force goes to war and fights everbody would be in the same service. (LOL)

This past year was a "light" deployment year for me, I only spent 129 days in the AOR....living in tents...with no cable or TV :(

RE: Gov't Screwing Troops in Iraq!!!

Hehe that's good. I spent 4 1/2 years stationed on Lackland as a Marine...that was a tough assignment!! Well, not too tough. I think the Air Force recruits only good looking women, cuz they're everywhere. And when they find out your a Marine... WOW! Lets just say they become alot more accomodating.
