Info for those doing an 02/03 GT MAF Swap

Well I'm going to be using an 03 85mm GT MAF on my upcoming dyno tune. Here what you need to do the swap and use a K&N conical filter.

the 02 GT MAF ford part #YC2Z-12B579-BARM $99.95 + $75 core charge from five star ford

If you go to corral.net or any other mustang forum you can find people to sell you their stock unit for well under $100, for mine for $60

This MAF has a 6 pin connector, out cars have a 4 pin harness. You need a wiring harness adapter to just plug this MAF in, or you can solder the wires. I believe the outer two wires on the GT maf are for the IAT that is built into the GT MAF. But since our IAT is seperate we don't need this.

Wiring harness: F68Z-12A690-AA $17.xx from five star ford

To use a conical filter you also need an adapter that can be bought from pro-m . Although it says it's for an 80/90mm unit, the 85mm GT maf will bolt up to it no problem. I was told this on the modular depot form "It is exactly the same MAF housing as the 99-00 80MM Lightning" When I called pro-m and asked they said it would be no problem with an 03 GT. So I am not expecting any problems.

plastic adapter $27 http://63.103.83.92/detail.asp?id=226
metal adatper $36 http://63.103.83.92/detail.asp?id=225

Keep in mind you need a chip or a dyno tune to do this mod! The transfer function is differnt and your car won't run right. Dennis and the SCT guys reccomend the 02 GT maf....do a search for Dennis' write up about it.

If I have any wrong into here let me know!!! :)

I just wanted to point out that that MAF is actually only 80mm. The opening is 85mm and tapers down to 80. The two outside pins are in fact for the IAT. It is like the 80mm Lightning only in size. The calibrations are not the same.

Well I didn't know that about the size Lonnie, thanks for the info. And also you need to splice the adapter for GT MAF to the stock plug that plugs into the car's wiring harness. When I looked at them they looked the same, but when I went to install it the plugs had notches in different spots. Very easy to do, all the colors match. =)

Lonnie, so will you get equilivant results using a lightning maf or an 02 gt maf assuming it's dialed in correctly on a NA car?

RE: Info for those doing an 02/03 GT MAF Swap

On a stock 4.6 with a proper tune you will see little or no difference from a MAF swap. Maybe 2-4 hp.

Yea I know, it's really not the restriction in our cars unless you do some major work. I basically did the swap because I didn't have the stock unit anymore and had a C&L meter. I didn't have problems with the C&L, but I know it could be tuned better with the GT unit.

Yes you do have to splice in the wires, good thing Ford stayed with the same color code this time.

From my experience the stock Mark 80mm MAF does fine. The GT does flow more due to it not having the tube going all the way through the center. But to see any substantial gain from switching to the GT is not likely. The other benefit with the GT is it has more data points in it’s calibration. So you’ll get a much better a/f curve when tuning. This mod is really more popular with the Tbird, CV and Mustang crowd besides the 5.0 guys.

But you should have seen a difference from the C & L to the GT I would think.
