Mercon V

Do I actually need to drain the trans and torque conveter and replace all the fluid with Mercon V? This car had a trans fluid / filter about 5K before I bought it ( I bought it @ 42K) and I assume it was refilled with Mercon III at that time since that is what the original owners manual called for. Remember, this is a 98' and it just had a trans job, so is the Mercon V swap worth my effort?

I thought the 98's all required V. If you don't have the paperwork, you can tell if it's V by the grotesque smell it has.

If 98's do in -fact require Mercon V, I would like to have cocrete proof of that. The previous owner had the trans fluid /filter /flush done @ PEP BOYS:eek: about 5K before I got It. I have the receipt (it was still in the glovebox) for this work, and it specifically states that Mercon III was used. I assume that armed with this proof, and some sort of documentation from Lincoln that Mercon V is specified, I should be able to return to Pep Boys and make them change to the V for free. Does anyone have or know where I san get this info?

I can't remember - maybe it's in the owners manual or it MAY say that on the dipstick. I'm too tired to check either right now, but I'm sure someone here knows for sure.

Yes, Use Mercon V is printed on the dipstick on 98 Mark's, and it is also printed in the owners manual. You will find the dipstick on the passenger side of the car by the firewall near the cam cover.

to add to drillers post... all older 4r70w's should have it! I used B&M's trick shift version I would'nt go back to my 95's rec.dex III for anything!!

Yes, Mercon V is recommended for older 4R70W transmissions but required for the '98 and up. Although they do allow dual-purpose fluids that meet specs for Mercon V.

Regardless, I doubt any credit will be forthcoming in any claim but I would certainly not hesitate to have fresh Mercon V replace whatever was put in.

I think you can go online and get the owners manual for the 98 if you don't have yours. It should specify which transmission fluid is required.

Not only is it printed on the dipstick, I also found it on FLM owner.com. I called PepBoys:eek: "customer service":eek: amd explained the dilemma. Apparently, they are eager to rectify this problem. I can't be sure of why; maybe it is because I have written proof of them using the wrong trans fluid in my car! I suppose that they might think that were I to have any trans issues in the future that I would blame them (They're Right), and that I might make a claim against them for repairs (right again). At first however, the person to whom I was speaking at the call center (who apparently had the service history of the car available after I told her the VIN) tried to say that the "f(r)iction modifier" added on that fateful day somehow magically transformed the petroleum based Mercon III to Mercon V. I, of course, has to immediately disabuse her of this preposterous notion. I'm quite sure that no amount of "magical modifier" could somehow chemically alter the basic makeup of the fluid from conventional to synthetic. Nevertheless, I have a 10a.m. appt. tomorrow at my local Pep Boys:eek: for a "Trans Flush and Fill". I am assured that this change to Mercon V will (even after driving for 7,000+ miles on the wrong fluid) rectify my precarious situation. Once again, this seems to be a wholly supernatural solution offered by the arcane masters employed at Pep Boys. I will be wearing a disguise when I enter that cesspit of automotive dissillusionment, and will vehemently deny ever having set foot inside should I ever be asked. The conclusion of this saga is forthcoming.....

I definately will not sign anything without my sister (she's a lawyer) present. God:frown:, you don't think that this could cause a "belly up" situation, as you so eloquently put it?

They probably did it cause Mercon lll is cheaper, and or no one reads the tech manuals over there either.

LOL, I wear a disguise when I go to K-Mart.

But good for you, free fluid flush and fill.

I also surfed a little and found the Ford TSB mandating Mercon V in all 98' and newer 4R70W's. Hopefully,:big-grin: I won't meet with any resistance from the daytime (Read:Real) manager when I go in tomorrow. Obviously, since I called on a Sunday evening, I spoke with the peon weekend / evening manager who "Yessed me to death" (that's my Mom being quoted) in a feeble attempt to pacify me. He assured me that I was schedued for this free "flush and fill", so I hope there are no further issues. I know none of you have ever seen me (which is one of the things I love, the anonymity of it all) but @ 6'3" and 275lbs. of state ranked amatuer bodybuilder, I can usually get what I want with just a mean look. I hope the manager doesn't force me to grimace at hm / her. :big-grin:

Actually, the TSB that Driller pointed to shows it for ALL MARK VIII's - '93-'98

Yes, the '93-98 Mark VIII is listed for Mercon V.

Study the chart on the last page. Mercon V is required for all 98 and up 4R70Ws regardless of model. It is "recommended" for earlier models. Ford did issue a specific Mark VIII TSB (I believe WAY before 1998) that recommended Mercon V to cure several ills of the 4R70W transmission in several applications. I don't have access to AllData anymore, but perhaps someone who does can look it up.
