New 5.0 in a Mark VIII.....

BIG ROLLER

formerly K.B.R.
Anybody bring this up yet?

Ever since it came out I have wondered if it can be done.I mean the 5.0 is the same size as the 4.6 and I think the engine mounts are in the same location. The only problem I can see other than maybe the computer and wiring harness would be the intake entering from the front.

What do you guys think?

Its loosely based on the old 4.6 IMO that's the way to go, but you have to get a new transmission for it also, which means new driveshaft blah blah blah.

That powertrain combo would cost double what any nice mark VIII would fetch, let alone all that $$ it would take to make it work.

But someone will do it.

you would not have the variable CAM timing, but just rebuild a Mark motor and stroke it to 5.0.

Regardless, keep an eye out for a wrecked stang.

Stroking the 4.6 t 5.0 is a good idea. That is what I really want to do to mine.Big bore, port and polish the heads, nice cams for a good mid power band and a cobra intake.

Infact,if going to a big bore 324 ci could be streatable enough that would be great to.

But that still doesn't mean that putting the new 5.0 in wouldn't be desired. Can you imagine just with a simple C&L air and intake upgrade and a tune up and you are at about 480+ hp N/A.And there is still more in it with a intake swap and cams.

Can you also imagine one built for boost?
Procharger,Vortech,Paxton or maybe even the SMS superchager under the stock Mark VIII hood.

Now all that I just said is just nothing but a PIPE DREAM but it sure would be nice.

but then again you would also have to rebuild everything else on the car to work with it. Easier to just buy the stang. unless of course you just want an extreme performance Mark8.

Would be sweet, but key words where you fail is "under the hood". :) Unless you do a crazy hood like mine.

a couple on this forum have stroked and blown their 4.6
Yeah,I can think of Mike's.That is a very nice set up he has.

I guess you can say that. With the CTS-V out there and now that it is a coupe,it got me thinking. If Lincoln doesn't have a equal than I guess I would just have to build one.Or dream about it for now.

I don't know.Putting the SMS supercharger on I think the hood could clear. The supercharger is designed to sink down between the heads since the intercooler is on top.And the 5.0 does have the same deck height as the 4.6.

Not to be a heretic here, but an LSx would be a much more economical way to get the same performance. It'd fit easier, too, with more aftermarket support.

I was thinking the same. If they can put one in a Solstice, it should work in the Mark VIII, LOL. Probably still a lot of work though.

The LS engine is a good platform but this new 5.0 is sure a nice piece.I just brought this up because I didn't see any other threads started about the possibility of ever doing the swap.
Now,if I had the money I would most likely build up the 4.6 because I really want to tear it down and build it up.But the same can be said about the 5.0 and any other engine out there.

Right now the wallet is not allowing that.

The 5.0 will be a good swap 4-5 years down the line when the aftermarket is built up, good tuning is available, and you can start finding them in junkyards. Of course this assumes that it makes it into a couple more common models, if all it is in is the Mustang you might not see a lot of them in junkyards.

The mod motor can make power, but it can not do it cheaply. I know a handful of guys who've worked them over and made good power, all of them will tell you the same thing - swap an LS in there. It's cheaper, it's easier, and it's more powerful.

The LSx has been put in everything - camaros, firebirds, corvettes, and of course trucks (lots and lots and lots of trucks). You can find an LS1 / trans (maybe even T56 if you look hard enough) combo relatively cheaply - you could probably get a whole setup, harness, ECU, and everything, out of a junkyard or a wrecked car for less than you can do a stroked 4.6 / 5.0 with ported 4 valve heads, and certainly for less than a new 5.0 crate motor.

What's a properly built 4.6 run, stroked and everything? $10k? Probably about that much for a new 5.0 crate motor. While either one would be sweet, it just doesn't make sense in a $5000 car (or a $1000 car in my case). $2000-$3000 for junkyard GM parts makes a little bit more sense. You just have to fit the 4.6L engine cover back on it somehow :)

I just read about the new F150 the other day. It's sweet - base engine is a 300 hp V6 - that's what the DOHC 5.4 in my Navigator makes! Next step up is a ecoboost - that runs in the 14's and can tow something like 7000 lbs. Then you can get the 5.0 and 6.2. Ford really has their **** together.

Now, if you're going to do a swap, wait until a few people have rolled their new F150's and see if you can get a 6.2 under the hood of the mark...

Sure the LSX engine family has been put in everything GM but so has it been into everything not GM like fox bodies, high boys ect: and sure it would defiently different to see one in a Mark VIII and like you said maybe alot cheaper. But the mod. 4.6 does and can make some descent N/A power but with the new 5.0 out there and it being the same physical size sure helps.Changing the wiring would be a must for the 5.0 but so would having to change for the LSX.

Now the Boss 6.2 would deffiently cool.Deck height as with a few others could be a problem but that's what a cowl hood is for, right?

On a side note,I do own a '92 5.0 that is pretty much a roller right now that I might have to sell which I am really trying to avoid. The new 5.0 would be at home in that bay and the 6.2 and all it's potential I can only imagine.
